Mohun Bagan vs Punjab FC: Three key battles that could decide Durand Cup quarter-final

These three key battles will surely impact the game’s final result.
Defending Champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant are set to clash with fellow ISL side Punjab FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex for the quarter-finals of Durand Cup 2024. Both sides displayed top performance in the group stages to claim a spot in the quarters.
Mohun Bagan won their first two games, before the high voltage Kolkata derby getting cancelled, to eventually top their group with seven points. Punjab FC also ended the group stage with seven points, with two wins and a draw.
Now, it’s time for the last eight games, with two teams in top form locking horns against each other. Mohun Bagan obviously hails a much stronger side on paper. They have the best blend of Indian and foreign players. Punjab FC too have a challenging squad. A few battles between some pivotal players can decide the outcome.
On that note, let’s have a look at the three key battles for the match between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Punjab FC.
1. Tom Aldred vs Luka Majcen

Tom Aldred had just joined the Mariners a few weeks back. Still, since his arrival, he has been an integral part of the defence for the ongoing competition. The 33-year-old started in both the games and even scored a goal in the last game. His apt interception and tackling haven’t let the opposition forwards penetrate.
Luka Majcen, Punjab FC’s key man upfront has been in quality form in the tournament. The captain scored a brace in the first game while netting one against Kerala Blasters. He needs to display a similar calibre to shock the mighty Mariners. However, Aldred will be the toughest man to beat for him.
2. Dimitrios Petratos vs Suresh Meitei

The No. 9, Dimitrios Petratos, has been a saviour for the Mariners ever since he joined. His decision-making while taking the shots and ability to penetrate the backline has been a major factor in Mohun Bagan’s past triumphs. He is expected to start the game. Surely, he will be the biggest threat to the opponent.
To hold the Mariners back, Suresh Meitei needs to do what many top ISL defenders couldn’t. Meitei needs to block Petratos well, otherwise Mohun Bagan will enjoy easy leads.
3. Jason Cummings vs Vinit Rai

Jason Cummings didn’t impress much in the last season. However, the 29-year-old has started with a bang this time. He featured in only one game but has managed to score twice and assist once. He is expected to perform the role of a goal-poacher against Punjab FC.
Vinit Rai shall be performing the toughest role in the game. He needs to control the midfield and block any possible chances, especially from Cummings. He has fared well in the competition, helping the side maintain a clean sheet twice, while also having a two-goal contribution.
