I-League 2024-25: All four foreigners of Gokulam Kerala FC
The Malabarians have registered only four foreigners for their 2024-25 I-League campaign.
Gokulam Kerala FC are all set to kick off their season as they take on Sreenidi Deccan away from home in the season opener of I-League 2024-25. Playing their first league game under the new manager Antonia Rueda, they will be determined to secure a dream start by clinching all three points.
As the season draws near, the Malabarians have made several changes to their squad. They have registered only four foreign signings for the league, while notable players like Abdu Lumala, Jose Luis Moreno, and Joris Correa have been left out of the squad.
Here are the foreign players who will be representing Gokulam Kerala FC in the I-League 2024-25 season:
Martin Chaves – Uruguay
Martin Chaves is Gokulam Kerala FC’s first foreign signing for the 2024-25 season. The Uruguayan has a lot of experience in India, having previously played for NorthEast United, Rajasthan United and Churchill Brothers.
The 26-year-old joins the club in great form, having tallied five goals and six assists in 22 appearances last season. His tireless work rate and creativity in attack make him a valuable asset for Rueda. The attacking midfielder’s consistent availability will also make him a reliable option throughout the long season.
Sergio Llamas – Spain
Sergio Llamas is one of the latest acquisitions for Gokulam Kerala in the middle of the park. The Spaniard has made numerous appearances for the renowned Spanish club Deportivo Alaves, having played several seasons in Spain’s Segunda Division (LaLiga 2) and competed in the Copa del Rey.
The 31-year-old brings creativity and effective ball progression in midfield for the Malabarians. He can maintain possession under pressure with his quick feet and skilful dribbling, helping them to gain control of the game around the opposition box and open up goal-scoring opportunities.
His exquisite passing techniques will be key to unlocking the opposition’s defence. His leadership on the pitch will be a bonus, and Antonio Rueda has already expressed confidence in the midfielder to make an instant impact for Gokulam Kerala FC.
Ignacio Abeledo – Spain
Ignacio Abeledo is ready to make his debut in India, with Gokulam Kerala FC in the 2024-25 season. Rising through the ranks of La Masia and Real Betis academy, the Spanish winger comes with a lot of experience under his belt. The 28-year-old has played for numerous clubs in the Spanish divisions and has represented his country at the U-17 and U-18 levels.
Abeledo is a menace on the flanks, cutting inside and scoring long-range goals with his left foot. He is a poacher in the box, always positioning himself at the far post to capitalise on chances arising from attacks. Rueda will have an explosive forward in his hands who can play across both wings.

The Malian international has also represented his country on seven occasions, including matches in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
The 31-year-old striker is expected to be the solution in front of the box for Gokulam. He is a skilful forward who finds goals with his positioning and clever runs behind the defence to get into scoring spaces. Antonio Rueda has already found him a perfect fit for his setup, with the forward expected to shine for the Malabarians.
