Jamshedpur FC ride momentum after narrow 1-0 victory over Mohammedan SC

The first matchweek of the Indian Super League (ISL) kick-started in fashion with the Men of Steel clinching victory on home soil.

Punjab FC, on the other hand, will begin their season after their first game against Odisha FC, which was initially scheduled for the Kalinga Stadium, has been postponed.

Jamshedpur FC clinched a 1-0 victory over the Black Panthers in their first game. It took Madih Talal just nine minutes to break the deadlock and seal the first win for the Red Miners. It will be a homecoming for Muhammad Uvais, who will be up against his former side in a familiar venue.

As the Steel City gears up to host the Shers from Punjab, head coach Owen Coyle briefed the media about the team’s preparation, squad fitness and more.

We also find out how Coyle plans to neutralize Punjab’s threats from the flanks at home.

The Shers have assembled a promising squad consisting of young talents including the likes of Khaimin Lhungdim, Kipgen and Muhammad Suhail. Furthermore, three of their captains are below the age of 26, reinstating Dilmperis’ commitment to foster and nurture young players in the club.

Owen Coyle said, “We know Punjab are a very good side. They have signed some very good players and have terrific young Indian talents. They are strong in attack and very dangerous going forward. We respect them a lot, but if we perform to our maximum, take care of the ball and stay focused, it is a game we can win. We’re back at the Furnace, looking to win another three points and build momentum.”

The JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur, also popularly referred to as the Furnace, records one of the highest average attendances in ISL. The Red Miners will be playing their majority league games in home this season. Coyle feels that such atmosphere really helps the player to outwork and outperform the opponents.

He said, “Every match is important, but it’s always nice to be at home with our fans. They create a fantastic atmosphere. However, being at home guarantees nothing. You have to earn the right to win. In a short season, building momentum early is important.”

Coyle warns his players not to be complacent

After a great start last season, Jamshedpur had a rough patch mid-season when they went on to lose consecutive games heavily. The former Burnley gaffer feels that it is important to keep the momentum high and extend the winning streak than to being complacent against a good side like Punjab FC.

He said, “When you win a game, it’s great to get the three points, but that’s behind you. You stay humble and focus on the next opponent. Punjab will be hungry, so we have to be fully concentrated from the first minute to the last.”

No wonder the Nigerian defender has been one of the standout players for Jamshedpur FC. He is reunited with Owen Coyle, and the former Queens Park defender feels that as a captain, it is important to keep motivating the players, especially those who might be having a tough day at work.

He said, “For me, everyone in the team is a captain. It depends on your mindset. I’m very happy for the confidence the coach has shown in me. It’s a big responsibility and I will do everything to keep the group united. As captain, my duty is to push every player, especially the one who is feeling down, and give him motivation.”
