Mohun Bagan SG vs Punjab FC: Key player battles to watch out for in ISL 2026-27 match

The Shers will face the Mariners in Kolkata on 31st October

Mohun Bagan SG are aiming to become the first team to defeat Punjab FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 campaign when these two sides meet at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday, 31 October 2026.

The Mariners are eager to stretch their two-match winning streak, but they’ll be facing a resilient Punjab FC side that has shown a lot of grit in getting wins in the early part of the campaign. The Mohun Bagan vs Punjab FC match will be Panagiotis Dilmperis’ first match against his former side in the ISL.

Panos is still facing questions around his tactics because of how Mohun Bagan have struggled to produce the most thrilling attacking football so far. But he’ll look to motivate the players to turn up with an enthralling display against Punjab FC.

This upcoming clash is going to be a high-octane one, with a lot of action attached to it as well. Both Mohun Bagan and Punjab FC have talented players in key areas of the pitch, those who are willing to fight their way to earning points for their side.

Hence, the players who tend to come out on top of these battles will have an influential role in ensuring that their side gets to control proceedings and dominate the other opponents. Here, we look at the key battles to watch out for in the Mohun Bagan vs Punjab FC clash.

Anirudh Thapa vs Ricky Shabong

Because of how both Mohun Bagan and Punjab FC like to control possession in their matches and dictate the tempo of the game, the midfield battle will be crucial to decipher which team gets the upper hand. Both sides will be eager to control things in the middle of the park, which can allow them to build up chances at their pace and also neutralize the threat of their opponents through the central areas.

Anirudh Thapa made a positive impact in Mohun Bagan’s recent win over Chennaiyin FC and he’ll look to keep his good form going in the upcoming clash. However, Thapa can expect a stiff challenge against Punjab FC’s energetic midfielder Ricky Shabong.

These two players should be involved in plenty of duels in the midfield, with both their pressing techniques and tendency to put opponents under trouble making for a fascinating clash of styles. Thapa, of course, has the experience advantage and aims to use that to help his side control things in the midfield.

However, Shabong will look to be a proactive figure who aims to recover possession in key areas and help his side on the transitions. The back-and-forth between these two midfielders should make for an action-packed clash, which could be decisive in determining which side controls the midfield battle.

Raphael Messi Bouli vs Alberto Rodriguez

Raphael Messi Bouli is the man on form for Punjab FC in the early parts of the 2026-27 season, having enjoyed a prolific bit of form their first few matches. Messi Bouli has scored three goals and bagged an assist in their three games so far and is flying high on confidence in the number 9 role for the Shers.

The 34-year-old is really excelling under the freedom given to him, enabling him to move around into pockets of space to trouble opponents. Messi Bouli’s impressive form means that the Mohun Bagan backline need to be at their proactive best to stop him, and the Mariners really need their centre-back Alberto Rodriguez to be on point with his defensive work.

Rodriguez has gained multiple years of experience in the ISL, earning a reputation for being a hard-working, aggressive centre-back who knows how to win duels and frustrate forwards. Rodriguez will need to maintain utmost concentration levels all throughout the match for him to keep Messi Bouli quiet.

The Punjab FC forward will always look to make clever runs into the final third to get at the end of chances, or even create them by dropping deep to slip in nice passes. Rodriguez has to track his movement perfectly to stop him from getting all that freedom, and the aggressive style of both players ill make this duel a fascinating one.

Lee Erwin vs Bijoy Varghese

Lee Erwin has had a decent start to his career at Mohun Bagan, but he’s yet to reach that kind of amazing consistency that fans are craving for. The Scottish forward can definitely get the supporters on his side with a ruthless display against Punjab FC, who have not been able to keep a clean sheet in the 2026-27 ISL so far.

Erwin will be looking to get into the free space in & around the opposition penalty areas on a regular basis and try to position himself at the end of chances. He needs to be more clinical with his finishing from the final third, but Erwin will not really have it easy against Punjab FC either.

The Shers, of course, have the tough Bijoy Varghese in their backline and the India international is known for being able to frustrate foreign strikers. Varghese will be looking to be an energetic presence in his backline, marking Erwin diligently and troubling him with some crunching tackles as well.

Erwin needs to be really unpredictable with his movement and positioning to outwit the hard-working Punjab FC defender and be able to give his side a major advantage in their attacking moves.
