ISL side NorthEast United rope in Nikhil Barla ahead of 2026-27 season

Barla joins the Highlanders on a three-year deal.

Indian Super League (ISL) club, NorthEast United FC have completed the signing of Nikhil Barla on a three-year deal ahead of the 2026-27 season. According to reports, Nikhil Barla had multiple options, but he chose to join NorthEast United FC keeping in mind the regular game-time.

The 23-year-old youngster from a small village of Khunti in Jharkhand has come a long way. The right-wing back recently made his debut for the senior Indian national team during the Unity Cup 2026 fixture against Zimbabwe in London.

A graduate of the Tata Football Academy, Barla played for the reserves team of Jamshedpur FC before Khalid Jamil spotted his talent and promoted him to the senior team. He even represented the Indian U23 team and is now regarded as one of the best young Indian talents in the Indian Super League.

After Jamshedpur FC’s exit from the Indian Super League, several top clubs approached Barla. While many players chase maximum dollar value at this age, the 23-year-old midfielder prioritised regular playing time over lucrative financial offers.

Does Barla fit seamlessly into Benali’s tactical setup?

Under Juan Pedro Benali, the Highlanders found stability but had their own defensive vulnerabilities. NorthEast struggled to neutralise heavy transitional overloads on the right flank and fullbacks like Dinesh Singh were often dragged out of position.

Benali prefers playing with highly energetic wingers like Parthib Gogoi and Jithin MS. However, when opposing teams block the half spaces, the build-up play becomes very predictable.

Barla logged over 1100 minutes across just 13 games in the 2025-26 season. He has an excellent work rate; he also offers positional versatility. He can be deployed both as a right back and a wing-back. His recovery speed is brilliant that allows him to track back rapidly.

He brings high-line positional versatility and also offers elite final-third delivery. An attacking-minded fullback, Barla seamlessly fits into Juan Pedro Benali’s tactical setup and can be a valuable asset for the Highlanders.

Barla prioritised gametime over lucrative offers

The young lad from Khunti declined financially lucrative offers to join NorthEast United FC at just 23. Over the last few seasons, the Highlanders have struggled in the right back position, and Barla’s arrival instantly solves that problem.

He is tactically well-suited to play under Juan Pedro Benali’s playing style. At such a young age, he chose to join the Highlanders, where he will be a regular starter and will not be relegated to a substitute.

Barla is one of the best Indian youngsters in the Indian topflight, who has come a long way. From representing the Indian U23 team to donning the national team jersey in London, he is one of the most sought-after wingbacks in Indian football presently.
