The Black Panthers will complete the Big Trinity of Kolkata’s footballing giants from ISL 11.

The Indian Super League (ISL) today announced the inclusion of Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC), as the newest member of the Indian Super League (ISL). Starting from the 2024-25 season, Mohammedan SC, one of the oldest active football clubs in the nation will compete in the top tier of Indian football, bringing the total number of clubs in the ISL to 13.

This promotion follows their triumphant 2023-24 I-League title-winning campaign, making them the second club after Punjab FC to earn promotion to the ISL. It also makes them the third side from Kolkata, the most from any state so far to play in the top tier of professional Indian football.

Fans will be delighted at the Black Panthers joining East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant to form the Maidan er Teen Prodhan (“The Three Chiefs of Maidan”) in the ISL. Mohammedan have also managed some promising displays in the Durand Cup 2024 and the likes of Mahitosh Halder can definitely make their presence felt in the league.

They did lose their brightest prospects from last season in Eddie Hernandez and David Lalhlansanga, with the latter making an impressive debut for rivals East Bengal in the Durand Cup itself. However, their reinforcements have been top-notch.

Mohammedan have brought in seasoned ISL veterans who want another chance to make a mark in the league. In doing so they have roped in attacker Makan Chothe, defender Gaurav Bora, and defensive midfielder Amarjit Kiyam. While they might seem like small names, they will invariably mentor the rest of the squad about the levels of competitiveness required to make it big in the ISL.

The Black Panthers have also made tweaks to their foreign contingent with Brazilian winger França, defensive midfielder Mohammed Kadiri, and clinical African striker César Lobi Manzoki joining current imports Joseph Adjei, Alexis Gomez, Mirjalol Kasimov, and Juan Nellar.
