Nandhakumar Sekar is East Bengal’s top Indian goal-scorer this season.

Indian Super League (ISL) side East Bengal have suffered a major blow to their top-six aspirations as their star Indian forward Nandhakumar Sekar is ruled out for the remainder of the season, as per a report in Bengali outlet RaySportz.

The forward has recently gone through a surgery during the international break and will need two months to recover and will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 ISL season and will return to action next season.

Nandha’s injury comes at the worst possible time for East Bengal as the Red & Golds are currently chasing a playoffs spot and missing their top Indian goal-scorer will hurt them big time going into the final leg of the season.

Nandhakumar Sekar’s season so far

After a phenomenal campaign with Odisha FC last season, Nandhakumar Sekar became a hot property in the transfer market and was landed by East Bengal on a three-year contract ahead of the ongoing season.

The forward has been in the best form of his life ever since making a switch to the Kolkata giants. He is their second highest goal-scorer in the league with five goals to his name and has also provided three assists in the process.

Currently enjoying a great run of form, Nadhakumar Sekar has scored nine goals for East Bengal this season across all competitions. His exclusion has definitely put a big dent to East Bengal’s hopes for a playoff spot this season.

The Kolkata giants began their campaign in strong fashion, but have had a mixed run of form ever since then. They’ve been highly inconsistent in the league this season with just four wins and 18 points to their name in 19 games so far.

However, they ended their 12-year trophy drought with the Kalinga Super Cup triumph in January this year. It was a statement win for the side as they defeated the defending Kalinga Super Cup Champions Odisha FC to lift the title.
