Oscar Bruzon signs one year contract extension with East Bengal FC

Oscar Bruzon took the Red and Golds into the quarter-finals of the AFC Challenge League last season.

Head coach Oscar Bruzon has decided to put pen to paper to sign his contract extension with the Kolkata giants. The Red and Gold Brigade had bid adieu to Carles Cuadrat mid-season after a terrible start to the ISL last season.

Oscar Bruzon took over the reins of the club midway and took them to their highest ever points tally in an Indian Super League season. The Red and Gold Brigade will be hoping to start the next season strongly and push harder for their first-ever playoff appearance in the ISL.

After signing his extension, Bruzon said, “I am thrilled to extend my journey with East Bengal FC for the upcoming season. While the previous season presented challenges, particularly after a slow start, we have collectively learned from those experiences and are now fully focused on reigniting the winning mentality that defines this great club. Our loyal supporters deserve nothing less than a team that reflects their passion, resilience and unwavering belief in East Bengal’s legacy.”

How has East Bengal fared under Bruzon?

ISL 2024-25: East Bengal FC Season Review

Oscar Bruzon’s arrival in the club injected a sense of renewed purpose and determination. The Kolkata giants managed to top their group in the AFC Challenge League, which consisted of teams like Nejmeh, Paro and Basundhara Kings.

They fell short to the Turkmenistani outfit Arkadag in the Quarter Finals after succumbing to a 3-1 aggregate defeat. Under Bruzon, the team that was finding it difficult to even clinch a point, not only went on to defeat big teams, but were short of 3 wins to make it to the ISL playoffs.

Their performance in the Kalinga Super Cup was underwhelming as the defending champions were the first team to bow out of the competition after a defeat to Kerala Blasters.

Can Bruzon take the Red and Gold Brigade into their maiden ISL playoffs?

East Bengal has a quality squad to compete even for the ISL Shield next season. Amidst rumours of Rahul Bheke joining East Bengal, the Indian defensive duo of Anwar Ali and Bheke could emerge as an impregnable wall for opposition teams.

Despite Cleiton Silva’s departure, Diamantakos and Naorem Mahesh have the ability to provide much-needed flair in the attacking prowess. Oscar Bruzon knows the strengths and weaknesses of his players, and he has shown signs of upgrading his team last season. It will be interesting to see if the former Celta Vigo reserves gaffer can guide East Bengal to glory in the upcoming season.
