FC Goa rope in former Shillong Lajong defender Rudra Ved Moola ahead of 2026-27 domestic season

Rudra Ved Moola has spent eight years in Spain.

Reigning Super Cup champions FC Goa have bolstered their defence by acquiring the services of Spanish returned former Shillong Lajong defender Rudra Ved Moola ahead of the commencement of the new Indian domestic 2026-27 season.

Khel Now understands that the deal, however, is still subject to the medical assessment.

Since the inception of the Indian Super League, FC Goa have built a reputation as the premier talent-spotters in Indian football. Unlike clubs that spend big bucks on established superstars, FC Goa invests in nurturing some of the most technically gifted talents across the country to build a sustainable model.

From scouting Liston Colaco during his Salgaocar days to bringing Ishan Pandita to India when he was competing in lower Spanish leagues for clubs like UD Almeria, CD Leganes and Lorca FC, the Gaurs are known for finding unpolished diamonds.

With less than a month remaining for the commencement of the Indian domestic season with the Durand Cup 2026, serving as the curtain raiser, FC Goa have bolstered their defence by signing an extremely talented defensive lad in the form of Rudra Ved, who has spent his initial years honing his skills in Spain.

In this article, we take a close look at Rudra Ved Moola’s journey in a nutshell and try to find out if the Spanish returnee can be a good fit for FC Goa.

Rudra’s journey so far from the Spanish leagues to Shillong Lajong

The Karnataka lad was just 13 when he joined JSW Bengaluru FC Youth Academy, where he formed his foundational defensive traits here as a young teenager. When he was just 18, the Spanish Pro Football (SPF) Academy facilitated his move to Spanish leagues.

He began his European odyssey with the Atletico Saguntino U19 team, where he made his official debut against La Creu CF. He is 6’2, his towering presence, athleticism and physical presence made him a vital defensive asset for the Valencia outfit.

He then made a move to Mare Nostrum CF, which competes in the Valencian Regional Senior Leagues. This was his transition moment from youth leagues to the gritty environment of senior men’s Spanish football.

At 22, he moved to Club Deportivo Acero, which competes in Tercera RFEF, the fifth tier of the Spanish football league structure. The century old club has previously produced big names that went on to play for Valencia CF and Levante UD.

After spending years training and building his reputation in Spain, he returned to India with South United FC, where he logged 1,300 minutes across 16 matches, registering 1 goal and 1 assist too.

Ahead of the 2025-26 season, he made a move to Shillong Lajong in the Indian Football League. He played a staggering 1,900 minutes and anchored his team’s defence to clinch 13 clean sheets and help the Meghalaya outfit become serious contenders for the IFL trophy.

Can Rudra be good fit for the Gaurs?

The Gaurs will face the Turkmenistan champions FK Arkadag, away from home, to vie for a back-to-back ACL 2 Group stage appearance. Regardless of the results, FC Goa will play continental football and they need a solid team that can compete for top honours both domestically and in Asia.

Rudra perfectly aligns with Gaurs’ philosophy of relying on possession-heavy and short-passing sequences. Moreover, he brings a significant physical presence with his towering presence in the backline.

The Gaurs heavily rely on fullbacks to accelerate up the pitch, so centre backs have to cover wide expanses of open spaces and Rudra perfectly does that.

Amid reports of veteran defender Sandesh Jhingan departing the Gaurs after the departure of Manolo Marquez, Rudra will have to adapt to the philosophy of a new head coach. While the IFL is deeply physical, the ISL operates at a much higher tempo, and the transition to the top flight has not been easy for many.
