Sunil Chhetri’s header stormed Bengaluru FC into the ISL Finals, beating FC Goa.

The Indian Super League (ISL) Trophy has eluded FC Goa for a long time, ever since the inception of this league and it will continue to do so for yet another season following a defeat to Bengaluru FC. The Gaurs’ dream of winning the ISL Trophy in front of their home fans back in the 2018-19 season was demolished by a header from a Bengaluru FC player. That team saw Gerard Zaragoza on the bench for the Blues.

Six years later, history repeated itself as a header from yet another Bengaluru FC player in the dying seconds of the game broke the hearts of the Goa fans. Goa did their best to equalise a two-goal deficit, but Chhetri’s header stormed Bengaluru FC into their fourth ISL Finals.

FC Goa Player Ratings (by Saikat Sengupta)

Hritik Tiwari – 6.0

The young FC Goa custodian could have saved that header from Chhetri better. He didn’t have much to do tonight as Bengaluru had just two shots on target. It was Tiwari’s second knockout game and he has a long way to go.

Boris Singh – 8.0

Boris was fantastic tonight from the right flank of the pitch. He poured in his heart and soul until the referee blew the final whistle. His overlapping runs and counterattacks made all the difference for the Gaurs.

Odei Onaindia – 7.5

Odei ensured FC Goa’s defence remains impenetrable against a mighty Bengaluru. Despite being subbed off, he was so passionate about the Gaurs as he even picked a yellow card for protesting against the referees.

Sandesh Jhingan – 8.5

The ISL Trophy has always eluded Jhinghan and it will continue to do so. The big wall of FC Goa’s defence did everything right today. However, his fate was cruel as Goa bowed out of the ISL Semi-Finals.

Ashish Sangwan – 8.0

Sangwan was brilliant tonight. He was a live wire for Manolo’s FC Goa from the left flanks. From running the ball down to the opposition’s D Box to helping Drazic initiate those attacks, he played well.

Sahil Tavora – 7.0

Tavora ensured FC Goa had full control over the game’s tempo and dictated the game brilliantly from the centre of the pitch. He could have done a little better to avoid those attacks from the Blues though.

Carl McHugh – 7.0

McHugh was substituted and Borja was brought in a lot early tonight. He played well but failed to find those gaps accurately to help his side find a goal in the first 45 minutes.

Udanta Singh – 7.5

Udanta poured his heart and soul against his former side to help Manolomake it to his second ISL Final. From those pinpoint deliveries into the box to what not, Udanta was fantastic tonight for FC Goa.

Ayush Chhetri – 6.5

Chhetri could have done well to repay Manolo’s faith. He tried his best to make those final entries into Bengaluru’s box, but couldn’t make a significant impact.

Dejan Drazic – 9.5

Dezan Drazic was unarguably the finest player for FC Goa in the second half. He almost scored the equaliser for the Gaurs until it got ruled offside. He was constantly an attacking threat for the Blues tonight.

Iker Guarrotxena – 8.0

Iker and the FC Goa strikers did everything right to fill that 2 goal deficit. He made all those runs into the D box and tested Gurpreet quite a few times.

Substitutes –

Armando Sadiku – 9.0

Sadiku brought enough happiness for the home fans in Fatorda after he scored that equaliser to take the match into extra time until Chhetri destroyed all their hopes and ambition to win the league.

Borja Herrera – 8.5

Borja’s inch-perfect free-kick completely shifted the momentum in Goa’s favour as they were an unstoppable force once they got their first goal.

Brison Fernandes – NA

Jay Gupta – NA

Bengaluru FC (By: Anuj T)

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu- 6

Gurpreet had a mixed game against Goa but did make some important saves on a very important night. The former India No.1 also made a spectacular double save against the Gaurs to keep his side in the game.

Namgyal Bhutia- 7

Back-to-back high-pressure games and back-to-back assists to commemorate his selection. Bhutia played a key role and set up Chhetri at the back post with the perfect ball.

Rahul Bheke- 6.5

Bheke was a rock again at the back for the Blues. Headed clearances and important tackles formed the basis for the win.

Chinglesana Singh- 7

Arguably the best one-on-one defender on the field, Sana showed his quality and was strong against the Gaurs’ attackers.

Naorem Roshan Singh- 6

A relatively forgetful night for Roshan Singh as he was not able to influence the game a whole lot.

Suresh Singh Wangjam- 5.5

Had a relatively good game until he was taken off as a precaution ahead of the ISL Final.

Pedro Capo- 6

Capo again showed his quality in the heart of midfield and ensured his team moved the ball with comfort and security.

Sivasakthi Narayanan- 5

Sivasakthi was at fault for Goa’s first goal and his silly challenge put his team under a lot of pressure in the second half.

Alberto Noguera- 6

Had another influential role in the Blues’ attacking forays. Also looked threatening and stretched Goa’s defence for space creation for his teammates.

Edgar Mendez- 6

A quiet night for the Blues’ main attacker, however, he showed great engine and endeavour for his side in attack.

Jorge Pereyra Diaz- 5.5

A disappointing night for Diaz in attack. Got into tussels, however, failed to do much in the game.

Substitutes:

Sunil Chhetri- 7

Captain’s performance. Was at the right place at the right time for his side and scored a decisive goal when his team needed it the most.

Ryan Williams- 6

Had some interesting moments against FC Goa defenders, however, failed to make them count in terms of goals or assists.

Aleksandar Jovanovic- N/A

Lalremtluanga Fanai- 7.5

The 21-year-old stepped in a pressure situation when Suresh went off. He showed his quality and fought for every loose ball on the night. An impressive outing.
