The Islanders picked up their first win of the season at the Gaurs’ fortress.

West Coast rivals FC Goa and Mumbai City locked horns at the Fatorda Stadium in the first Indian Super League (ISL) game on Saturday. Both sides were looking to change their fortunes and move up the table.

The Islanders started the game on the front and eventually found the back of the net in the 22nd minute through Nikos Karelis. Yoell Van Nieff added to FC Goa’s misery in the 41st minute, winning the ball and beating Kattimani from outside the box to give Mumbai City a 2-0 lead at halftime.

FC Goa returned with vengeance in the second half and scored through an Armando Sadiku penalty in the 55th minute. Though the Gaurs tried to pile up the pressure on MCFC’s defence, they eventually couldn’t test Phurba Lachenpa as Mumbai City FC won 2-1 on the night.

Here are the Indian player ratings for the game:

FC Goa (by Aasif Ali)

Laxmikant Kattimani – 4.5

The goalkeeper had a poor first half, conceding two goals. He also made a nervy error that Mumbai City failed to capitalize on. Kattimani made a good save in the second half and that was his only save of the game.

Udanta Singh – 6.0

Playing as the right back, Udanta did good defensively. The former Bengaluru FC player also made a few attacking runs but was not able to make the most of them.

Jay Gupta – 6.0

Makeshift center-back Jay Gupta made two tackles and clearances each on the night and didn’t make any telling mistakes. He was given a yellow card late in the second half.

Aakash Sangwan – 6.0

The left-back made multiple runs up the field and put in five crosses, of which only one was accurate. Defensively, Sangwan made three tackles in the game.

Rowlin Borges – 6.5

FC Goa’s midfield maestro was quite calm throughout the game. Rowlin Borges helped the Gaurs in attack as well, and his ball should have been converted by Armando Sadiku in the first half. He was substituted in the 68th minute.

Boris Singh Thangjam – 7.0

Boris Singh was the most involved among FC Goa’s attackers. Came to life in the second half whipping in crosses and generating big chances, one of which his teammate failed to capitalize on.

Brison Fernandes – 6.5

He was guilty of giving the foul that eventually resulted in Mumbai City’s first goal through a setpiece. Attacking-wise, Brison struck the post and was much more involved in the second half. He was substituted in the 85th minute.

Substitutes

Sahil Tavora – 5.0

The birthday boy came on in the 68th minute for Rowlin Borges. However, there were no telling moments that came from his boot in the game.

Nim Dorjee – N/A

The 28-year-old came on in the 85th minute. Dorjee had a shot after coming on, but he failed to hit the target.

Mumbai City FC (by Parashar Kalita)

Phurba Lachenpa – 6.0

Phurba made an outstanding save in the first half, denying Armando Sadiku’s right-footed shot from close range. He faced numerous attacks in the second half but needs to improve his punch-out clearances, as one found Borja Herrera, who luckily missed. Guessed Sadiku’s spot-kick correctly, but the shot was too strong to save for any goalkeeper.

Mehtab Singh – 7.5

The Islanders’ center-back stood firm in the defensive half, denying many of FC Goa’s attacks. He made nine clearances, including four headed ones, and registered four recoveries. In the 84th minute, he won a header and directed it toward the goal, but the goalkeeper smothered it.

Valpuia -5.5

He was fortunate that the referee did not award a penalty to FC Goa for pulling Sadiku’s shirt. However, he did concede a penalty later after a late tackle on the same player inside the box, which also earned him a yellow card. In defense, he made two clearances and three interceptions.

Vikram Partap Singh – 6.0

Playing as a left winger, Vikram worked hard, making runs across the field from the defensive half to the attacking third. His hunt for a goal continues, as Udanta from FC Goa handled him well in this match.

Lallianzuala Chhangte – 6.0

Chhangte was not impactful in the first half. He took a long-range shot early in the second half, but it went off-target.

In the 76th minute, he delivered a good cross and tried to create some opportunities in the final fifteen minutes. He took several shots, but they either went wayward or were blocked by FC Goa players.

Brandon Fernandes – 5.5

Brandon took a shot in the first two minutes of the game, which went off-target. He played mostly in midfield but was not as impactful as he’s known to be. Maintained a passing accuracy of 68%.

Nathan Asher Rodrigues – 6.0

Nathan lost possession near his own box and was fortunate that FC Goa couldn’t convert the golden opportunity. Boris Singh gave him a tough time on the left side of the backline. He made three clearances and three interceptions.

Substitutes

Noufal PN – 6.0

Substituted in the 71st minute, Noufal made an immediate impact. He took three shots, but all were blocked by FC Goa’s defenders. His runs down the wings were impressive.

Sahil Panwar – N/A

Substituted into the match in the 83rd minute.
