In an attempt to clear the danger, veteran Chennaiyin defender Pritam Kotal [49'] inadvertently headed the ball into his own net, wrong-footing Nawaz.

Clifford Miranda's side pushed hard for an equalizer in the closing stages, with debutant Iñigo Martín and young striker Irfan Yadwad coming close. However, crucial defensive clearances from Valpuia and a solid display from Phurba Lachenpa ensured Mumbai City held on for the opening night clean sheet.
