FC Goa and Mumbai City FC lock horns in an exciting ISL semi-final clash.
FC Goa are set to host Mumbai City in the first leg of their 2023-24 Indian Super League (ISL) semi-final at the Fatorda Stadium, Goa on Wednesday (April 24). With both their games in the regular league stages resulting in two draws, something has got to give when the two ISL heavyweights take center stage in a thrilling semi-final.
This will be an exciting battle between two of the ISL’s most efficient attacking sides. Manolo Marquez, to his credit, has also transformed the Gaurs into a rigid defensive unit – while Petr Kratky has helped Mumbai transition well in the post-Des Buckingham era to continue playing dominating, attacking football. The first leg will be crucial in tipping the scale in either team’s favor in the semi-final ahead of the return fixture in Mumbai.
With that being said, here we look at the three keys to success for both FC Goa and Mumbai City ahead of this first-leg encounter.
FC Goa
Create enough space for Noah Sadaoui
Noah Sadaoui has been FC Goa’s driving force in the ISL and has 17 goal contributions (11 goals, 5 assists) so far. The Moroccan can be a menace for any side but Mumbai will probably try to mark him out of the game.
FC Goa’s players need to work hard to open up the space for Sadaoui to move into and play the ball to him more often with space to run into. They also must create chances and find him in the ideal areas to put his finishing skills to good use.
Keep control of the midfield battle
As both sides love to dominate possession, this game will boil down to who can control the tempo in the middle of the mark. FC Goa’s Carl McHugh, Rowllin Borges, and Brandon Fernandes will need to be at their energetic best to trifle the Islanders’ sharp midfield.
They need to be proactive with their challenges, press them in the key areas, and keep hold of the ball as much as possible. The Goa midfielders have to work hard to win the ball back in the key moments and then unleash their speedy attackers forward to cause damage.
Stay alert in the wide areas
Mumbai City’s biggest attacking threat comes from their wing play, as they boast some of India’s most potential attacking players. That is why FC Goa must have enough protection in the wide areas to stifle Mumbai’s attacks before they can reach the final third.
The Goa full-backs and wingers need to operate as one unit in hassling the likes of Lallianzuala Chhangte and Bipin Singh, not allowing them any free room to deliver terrorizing shots on goal or crosses into the box.
Mumbai City
Feed Jorge Pereyra Diaz
Jorge Pereyra Díaz had a frustrating outing against Mohun Bagan recently because he was phased out of the game. Mumbai City can’t let that happen against Goa, even though the Gaurs’ center-backs will keep their eyes peeled on him.
Mumbai have to play to Diaz’s strengths, getting him more involved in the link-up play in attacking moves. The players must track his runs better to feed him in promising goal-scoring areas in & around the box to enhance their chances of getting a big win.
Keep composure in the heat of the game
The Islanders have the luxury of playing the second leg at home, where their winning chances are significantly amplified – having won seven of their 11 home games in the league stages. Mumbai need to be composed and not let their emotions get the better of them.
Kratky has to ensure his side aren’t unnecessarily aggressive or pick up bookings, nor do they get rattled by anything Goa does. The Islanders need to keep their foot on the ground, be smart with their possession play, and frustrate Goa – forcing them to make mistakes that they can pounce on with their bursting counter-attacks.
Be wary of Goa’s transitional threat
FC Goa, who have scored 41 goals so far this season, have been a terrorizing force on their counter-attacks and fast-breaks under Marquez. The Gaurs love to win the ball in situations when their opposition’s backline is disrupted and then storm forward in numbers to cause chaos.
Kratky has to ensure that Mumbai doesn’t fall victim to Goa’s ploys and remains a compact defensive shape at all times. The Mumbai City backline has to be firm against Goa’s dangerous pace and creativity, and the midfielders will need to track back efficiently to stop the Gaurs from terrorizing them on the counter-attack.
