Bosnian midfielder joins Mohun Bagan SG as rebuild gathers pace

Mohun Bagan SG’s summer rebuild is showing no signs of slowing down. Day after agreeing a deal for former FC Goa forward Dejan Dražić, the Mariners have officially announced the singing of former Punjab FC midfielder Samir Zeljković.

The 27-year-old arrived in India only last season but quickly established himself as one of Punjab FC’s most reliable performers.

Although primarily a centre-back, Zeljković spent large parts of the campaign in midfield and adapted comfortably to the role. Punjab often used him as the deeper presence in midfield, allowing others around him more freedom going forward.

A proven player in ISL

Samir’s numbers reflected the influence he had in ISL. In 17 appearances across all competitions, he scored three goals and provided three assists. In the ISL alone, he registered five goal contributions in 13 matches, an impressive return for a player whose game is built around defensive work.

Mohun Bagan are expected to lose several foreign players this summer and have already moved aggressively in the market. The signing of Dražić addressed one area of the pitch. Zeljković would solve another.

The Bosnian’s ability to play in defence and midfield is believed to be one of the main reasons he has been signed for. The club are also continuing their search for a new head coach, with discussions still ongoing with multiple candidates.

Zeljković becomes the latest addition in what is shaping up to be a busy transfer window at Salt Lake.
