Mohun Bagan vs Chennaiyin FC: Key player battles to watch out for in ISL 2026-27 match

VYBK is set to host Mariners first home ISL 2026-27 season clash

Mohun Bagan are aiming to add to their winning momentum in the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) when they host Chennaiyin FC at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, on Monday (26 October 2026). The Mariners are flying high after a hard-fought win over SC Delhi in their previous clash, and face a struggling Chennaiyin FC side, who are seeking their first win of the campaign.

The Mariners will be playing their first home game of the 2026-27 ISL against the two-time ISL winners, who are yet to really pick up their playing level under Clifford Miranda this season. Despite there being quite a bit of difference in quality between the two sides, Mohun Bagan definitely can’t take this game for granted because of the number of quality players that the Marina Machans possess.

There are going to be a few feisty player battles in the clash because of the determination amongst both sides to get a win. These battles can be decisive in determining which side gets the upper hand in this upcoming clash and swings the momentum onto their side’s favour. Here, we look at the three key player battles for the Mohun Bagan vs Chennaiyin FC clash.

3. Lalengmawia Ralte vs Madih Talal

Apuia could play a vital role vs Chennaiyin FC at VYBK on 26th October.

Madih Talal was roped in by Chennaiyin FC to bring that magic spark to their attack, but he’s yet to hit his top gear in the 2026-27 season. The ex-East Bengal midfielder will look to do so at the expense of Mohun Bagan and be a thorn in their side.

However, Talal faces a challenging test against the Mariners’ midfield – which features the impressive Lalengmawia Ralte. Apuia has asserted himself as a key player under Panagiotis Dilmperis’ system, playing an important role in the build-up play with his incisive forward passes. However, in the Chennaiyin FC clash, Ralte will need to focus on his defensive work as well.

He’ll need to keep a close eye on Talal’s movement and positioning inside the Mohun Bagan half to limit his influence in Chennaiyin FC’s attack. Apuia needs to nail his tackles and be smart at dispossessing the opposition midfielder to nullify his overall attacking threat.

For Talal, it’ll be a case of having to be unpredictable with his movement to trouble the opposition midfielder and also needing to be nailed on with his final third passes and positioning to pose a major goal or creative threat for the Kolkata side.

2. Ramon Tanque vs Alberto Rodriguez

Mohun Bagan are yet to keep a clean sheet in the 2026-27 ISL season, and that is one objective that they’ll be eager to achieve in the Chennaiyin FC clash. However, the Mariners face off against a team that has some really unpredictable attacking talents at their disposal – including that of Ramon Tanque.

The Brazilian striker was signed by Chennaiyin FC on loan for the 2026-27 season, and he is yet to break his goal duck in the ISL. The 28-year-old, however, scored nine goals last season for Thailand side Persib Bandung and is looking to add to Chennaiyin FC’s goal-scoring threat against Mohun Bagan. Tanque, however, will face off against a formidable challenge against Alberto Rodriguez in the upcoming clash against the Mariners.

Rodriguez is determined to earn his side’s first clean sheet of the season, meaning he’ll probably be way more proactive and tenacious in his performance. Rodriguez is going to look to frustrate Ramon & co by reading the Chennaiyin FC attacks perfectly and nailing his positioning to make crucial challenges to thwart their threat. That puts more onus on the Brazilian striker to bring the element of surprise that was missing from his game in the last two games.

Ramon will need to make good use of his 6’2 height and physical stature with his hold-up play and winning duels. He’ll also need to be much more agile with his clever off-the-ball runs, getting to the end of chances and putting them away efficiently to outwit Alberto Rodriguez and his Mohun Bagan backline.

1. Lee Erwin vs Nuno Reis

Lee Erwin is in action for Mohun Bagan in the IFA Shield 2026.

For Mohun Bagan to be able to get a high-scoring win over Chennaiyin FC, they will definitely need their new striker Lee Erwin to be at his unstoppable best. The Scottish forward scored his first goal in the ISL in the previous game against SC Delhi, and he’s now looking to get his first goal at the Salt Lake Stadium in front of the home fans as well.

Erwin proved himself as a slick, unpredictable striker in the last few games – with his ability to sniff out chances and direct dangerous shots on goal making him quite an intimidating factor for the Mariners. However, Erwin will also face a formidable challenge against Chennaiyin FC centre-back Nuno Reis in this upcoming clash.

Reis, who was a Mohun Bagan player but never played for them, is aiming to make his former side regret not giving him a bigger role. Reis will need to be instrumental in holding his backline to maintain a compact, strong shape and working extremely hard to cut down chances for the Mariners.

The Portuguese centre-back has to be nailed on with his positioning to make key clearances and win duels to frustrate the Mariners. Erwin, however, will look to thrive under the pressure of this duel – as he looks to outwit Reis with his proactive nature and make sure that his goal-scoring form continues.
