ISL: North East United FC signs Spanish midfielder Chema Nunez Martin on one-year deal

Chema Nunez has been a product of the esteemed Sevilla FC’s youth academy
The reigning Durand Cup champions have bolstered their midfield with the arrival of the dynamic Spanish midfielder, Chema Nunez, from Spanish third division side, Antequera CF. He has been signed on a one-year deal with an option to extend a year further.
North East United FC were the second-highest goal-scoring team in the competition after finishing fourth in the ISL points table last season. Chema’s ability to switch position and play as a right winger allows Benali to make full use of his versatility and talent.
After putting pen to paper, Chema said, “I’m excited to begin this new chapter with NorthEast United FC. I’ve heard great things about the club, its passionate fans, and the region’s love for football. I talked with the coach, and it convinced me that it was the best move for my career. I’m looking forward to contributing to the team’s ambitions and creating special memories together.”
Chema Nunez’s career in brief
The 28-year-old Spanish attacking midfielder has been a product of the esteemed Sevilla FC’s youth academy and also rose through the ranks of Albacete, Real Betis B and Almeira. The 2024-25 season saw him clock over 3000 minutes and score three goals in the Spanish third division for Antequera CF.
Chema Nunez’s vast experience honing his skills in a highly competitive Spanish footballing circuit makes him a valuable asset for the Highlanders. His versatility to be deployed as a right winger efficiently will allow Juan Pedro Benali to make full use of his pace and acceleration from the flanks.
Juan Pedro Benali also expressed his happiness and said, “Chema is a technically gifted player who will bring creativity and control to our midfield. His ability to unlock defences and dictate the tempo of the game will be a valuable asset for us. We’re very pleased to welcome him to the Highlanders’ family.”
Can Chema Nunez fill Nestor Albiach’s void?
Nestor Albiach had a brilliant season with the Highlanders. He made 25 appearances while finding the back of the net six times last season. His departure has left a void in the Highlander’s attack.
With the experience and technical brilliance Nunez brings to the table for the Highlander, he will be tasked with the responsibility to fill Albiach’s boots and help ISL Golden Boot winner, Alaaeddine Ajaraie, operate more effectively in front of the goal while unleashing his creativity in the midfield.
On Nunez’s arrival, North East United FC CEO Mandar Tamhane said, “We are delighted to welcome Chema to NorthEast United FC. His arrival underlines our intent to strengthen key areas with quality international experience. We believe he will thrive in our environment and become a vital cog on our side.”
