Mumbai City FC players headline ISL 2023-24 team of the tournament

It was a season defined by moments of brilliance by key individuals.

The 2023-24 season of the Indian Super League was full of memorable moments that will live in the hearts of the fans for days to come. It ended after a sensational final contest between Mumbai City FC and Mohun Bagan SG where the former emerged as winners of the playoffs trophy, maintaining their 100% win record in the ISL finals owing to brilliant performances by their players.

Throughout the season, plenty of individuals earned respect and admiration for their crucial contributions to their respective clubs. The following players left the fans in awe with their jaw-dropping performances and made Khel Now’s Team of the Season for the 2023-24 Indian Super League season.

Here is a look at the lineup:

Formation: 3-4-3

GK – Phurba Lachenpa (Mumbai City FC)

Phurba Lachenpa emerged as the winner of the Golden Glove award after securing nine clean sheets for the Islanders. His performances make a great case for a national team call-up. Perhaps, it’s time the Blue Tigers moved on from Amrinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

RCB – Rahul Bheke (Mumbai City FC)

Rahul Bheke captained Mumbai City FC to the ISL Trophy in style. The defender kept things tight at the back and featured in 23 matches during the season for the side, leading by example. 

CB – Subhasish Bose (Mohun Bagan SG)

Subhasish Bose came extremely close to captaining the Mariners to a league double by winning the ISL League Winners’ Shield and losing out on the Trophy. The defender played in every game of the league and the playoffs, impressing at every turn despite finishing as a runner-up in the final.

LCB – Jay Gupta (FC Goa)

Jay Gupta had a major breakthrough during the 2023-24 season while playing for FC Goa. His physicality and world-class goals defined his time with the Gaurs, earning him a call-up for the Indian men’s national team camp. 

CDM – Ahmed Jahouh (Odisha FC)

Ahmed Jahouh was in a league of his own, dominating every single time he took the field for Odisha FC across the season. He had the most successful passes (1367) of all players in the campaign and played a key role in the Kalinga Warriors reaching the semi-final. 

LM – Madih Talal (Punjab FC)

Punjab FC won a lot of hearts in their debut Indian Super League campaign and Madih Talal was at the centre of everything positive produced by the Shers. The midfielder finished the season with 10 assists, the most by an individual in the competition.

RM – Brandon Fernandes (FC Goa)

Brandon Fernandes showed his quality for FC Goa and was unlucky to guide the team to the ISL playoffs trophy as captain. The midfielder contributed with three goals and four assists across 20 appearances for the Gaurs.

CAM – Dimitrios Petratos (Mohun Bagan SG)

Dimitrios Petratos was often at the centre of everything magical that Mohun Bagan SG did, including playing a key role in Jason Cummings’ goal in the final. The attacker scored 10 goals and made seven assists in 23 appearances for the club. 

RW – Lallianzuala Chhangte (Mumbai City FC)

Lallianzuala Chhangte had one of his most successful seasons in the Indian Super League. The winger was in breathtaking form, scoring 10 goals and producing six assists in the process, finishing the season as the highest goalscoring Indian.

LW – Vikram Partap Singh (Mumbai City FC)

Vikram Partap Singh finally emerged as one of the regular starters at Mumbai City FC in the 2023-24 season, particularly under Petr Kratky who was rewarded for his faith in the young Indian attacker. In recognition of his performances, the 22-year-old won the Emerging Player of the League award.

ST – Dimitrios Diamantakos (Kerala Blasters FC)

Dimitrios Diamantakos won the 2023-24 ISL Golden Boot award after scoring 13 goals in only 17 appearances for Kerala Blasters FC. He went only six games without scoring a goal and further added three braces to his brilliant goalscoring feats.
