Several English players have shown their talent in the ISL.

The Indian Super League (ISL) has witnessed the arrival of several high-profile English footballers over the years, each leaving their unique mark on the league. These players have significantly contributed to the growth and popularity of the ISL, bringing their experience and flair to Indian football.

Their performances have not only entertained fans but also raised the competitive standards of the league. Here, we at Khel Now celebrate the top 10 English players who have graced the ISL with their talent and experience:

10. Garry Hooper

Garry Hooper signed a one-year deal with Kerala Blasters and made an immediate impact by scoring his first goal for the club through a penalty against NorthEast United.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw. Hooper’s landmark moment came when he scored his 200th league goal against Chennaiyin FC. Though his time in ISL was brief, Hooper’s presence added significant value to the Blasters’ attack.

9. Peter Hartley

Peter Hartley became a defensive stalwart for Jamshedpur FC, playing 47 matches and leading the team to win the League Winners’ Shield in the 2021-22 season.

Known for his robust defending, Hartley made 111 tackles, 54 interceptions, 166 clearances and 49 blocks. Under his leadership, Jamshedpur FC’s defence became one of the most formidable in the league.

8. Curtis Main

Curtis Main joined Bengaluru FC in the 2023 summer transfer window and made an immediate impact by scoring on his ISL debut against Kerala Blasters.

Despite a promising start, Main struggled for consistency, scoring only two goals in eight appearances. His physicality and work-rate were commendable, but he couldn’t quite meet the high expectations set by the Blues.

7. Jermaine Pennant

Jermaine Pennant, a former Liverpool and Stoke City winger, played for FC Pune City in the inaugural ISL season.

Despite his high-profile arrival, Pennant struggled to make a significant impact, failing to register a goal or an assist in his seven appearances. His stint in the ISL remains a lesser-known chapter of his career.

6. Ryan Edwards

Ryan Edwards, a defender for Chennaiyin FC, has been a consistent performer in the ISL. In the 2023/2024 season, Edwards made 23 appearances, scoring two goals.

He played a crucial role in the team’s defence and contributed significantly in key matches, including scoring in a 3-2 victory against Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Edwards’ experience in both the ISL and the Scottish Premiership has made him a valuable asset for Chennaiyin.

5. Antonio German

Antonio German joined Kerala Blasters in 2015 and quickly became a fan-favourite. Over two seasons, he made 23 appearances, scoring six goals and providing five assists.

German’s ability to both score and create goals was vital for the Blasters, making him a standout performer during his time in the league.

4. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas joined Jamshedpur FC for the 2022-23 ISL season, wearing the No. 10 jersey. He made 17 appearances, scoring two goals and creating 28 chances.

Despite a mixed season, Emmanuel-Thomas’ technical skills and vision added a creative spark to Jamshedpur’s midfield.

3. Wes Brown

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown joined Kerala Blasters in 2017, reuniting with coach René Meulensteen. Brown made 14 appearances, contributing significantly to the team’s defence with 15 interceptions, 14 tackles won and 51 duels won. His experience and leadership were invaluable to the Blasters’ backline.

2. Adam Le Fondre

Adam Le Fondre, known for his clinical finishing, had a memorable spell with Mumbai City. The 34-year-old striker was instrumental in the Islanders’ triumph, helping them secure both the League Winners’ Shield and the ISL title.

Le Fondre netted 11 goals and provided one assist in 23 matches, forming a formidable partnership with Bartholomew Ogbeche and Hugo Boumous. His contributions were vital in Mumbai City’s qualification for the AFC Champions League.

1. David James

David James, the former England goalkeeper, joined Kerala Blasters as a player-manager for the inaugural ISL season in 2014.

Under his guidance, the Blasters reached the final, but fell short against Atletico de Kolkata. James’ presence was pivotal in establishing Kerala Blasters as a competitive team in the ISL’s early years.
