The list features some of the most promising youngsters in the league this season.

The Indian Super League (ISL) kicked off its 11th season with a thrilling first week that lived up to the high expectations. Mohun Bagan Super Giant played out a brilliant 2-2 draw against Mumbai City FC in the opener while Chennaiyin FC eased past Odisha FC in a 5-goal thriller. Bengaluru FC showed no mercy for former boss Carles Cuadrat and his team at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium while Punjab FC registered back-to-back wins in Kochi in two successful seasons taming the Blasters.

Debutants Mohammedan Sporting were left disappointed in their debut ISL game as Durand Cup 2024 champions NorthEast United FC stole a last-gasp victory over the I-League 2023-24 winners. In the last game of the first match week, Khalid Jamil’s Jamshedpur FC similarly leapfrogged FC Goa to register their first three points.

Indian players in these games particularly shone on the pitch, showcasing their skills and making significant contributions to their respective teams. Here, we highlight the top five Indian performers from Matchweek 1 of the ISL 2024-25.

5. Tekcham Abhishek Singh (Punjab FC)

Despite being deployed in an unconventional position at left-back, Tekcham Abhishek Singh showed great composure for Punjab FC in their opening ISL match against Kerala Blasters. The teenage defender exhibited exceptional composure and tactical awareness, successfully nullifying the threat of the Tuskers’ winger Rahul KP. Singh’s defensive discipline was visible as he won three tackles, six duels, and made two crucial interceptions.

Abhishek’s performance is even more impressive considering his age and lack of experience in the league. If he continues to play with such maturity, Punjab FC may have found a reliable defender to build their backline around.

4. Jithin MS (NorthEast United FC)

NorthEast United FC’s Jithin MS carried his fine form from the Durand Cup into the ISL opener. A tireless workhorse on the left wing, Jithin consistently troubled the opposition and was eventually named the Man of the Match for his efforts. Although the game lacked fireworks, Jithin’s relentless running and pressing kept the opposition in check and helped his team stay on the front foot.

He created two key chances during the game, constantly threatening with his pace and dribbling ability. Jithin’s contributions extended beyond offense as he tracked back, helping his team defensively. His energetic presence on the pitch was crucial for NorthEast United FC, and he seems poised to be a key player for the Highlanders this season.

3. Noufal PN (Mumbai City FC)

Noufal PN made a notable debut for Mumbai City FC, showcasing his flair and creativity. The former Gokulam Kerala winger was instrumental in his team’s comeback from 2-0 down to level the match at 2-2 in the first game of ISL 2024-25. His pace and trickery on the left side posed a constant threat to the Mohun Bagan defense, keeping them on high alert throughout the game. Noufal played a crucial role in Mumbai’s first goal by earning a corner, which Tiri eventually headed into the net.

He also provided the assist for the second goal, using his speed to exploit gaps in the opposition’s defense. Noufal’s debut was a promising sign for Mumbai City FC, and his performance earned him a deserved spot on this list.

2. Vinith Venkatesh (Bengaluru FC)

Vinith Venkatesh‘s story is one that many young footballers dream of. The 19-year-old winger, who joined the Bengaluru FC academy at the age of 8, made a fairytale debut for the senior team. Not only did he become the club’s youngest debutant, but he also managed to find the net in his very first ISL game.

His goal was the result of intelligent positioning and composure inside the box, showcasing his natural goal-scoring instincts. Although he was substituted at halftime, his brief time on the field left a lasting impression. His confidence and technical skills indicate that he could be a star in the making for Bengaluru FC.

1. Farukh Chaudhary (Chennaiyin FC)

Often criticized for not living up to his potential, Farukh Chaudhary silenced his doubters in style with a stellar performance for Chennaiyin FC in their first match of the ISL 2024-25. Farukh was unstoppable in the attacking third, scoring two vital goals against a well-organized Odisha FC defense. His movement off the ball was intelligent, constantly finding pockets of space to exploit. He nearly completed his hat-trick but was narrowly off-target.

If this form continues, Farukh Chaudhary could finally have his breakout season, becoming a crucial asset for both his club and the national team.
