Following the end of Matchweek 14 of the Indian Super League (ISL), the matches showcased incredible performances, especially from Indian players, who played instrumental roles for their respective teams. From impactful goals to solid defensive displays, these players proved why they are first names on the team sheet in key matches.
Here’s a look at the top five Indian performers from this round of matches:
5. Korou Singh (Kerala Blasters FC)
The 18-year-old continues to prove why he is one of the brightest sparks for his side in their matchweek 14 encounter against Jamshedpur FC. The young attacker showcased his flair and creativity, consistently troubling the opposition with his pace and dribbling.
He once again showed his ability to take on defenders and create opportunities while standing out for making penetrating runs into the final third. Though he did not get on the scoresheet and was restricted to taking only one shot, his work rate was crucial in motivating his teammates.
He embodies Kerala Blasters‘ determined approach which makes him one of the most exciting young prospects in Indian football.
4. Anirudh Thapa (Mohun Bagan Super Giant)
Anirudh Thapa demonstrated his class in Mohun Bagan Super Giant FC’s midfield during their clash with Punjab FC. The experienced playmaker dictated the tempo of the game with his crisp passing and intelligent positioning. He helped Mohun Bagan retake the lead after winning a penalty, which was swiftly converted by Jamie Maclaren.
To put the cherry on the top, Thapa produced a beautiful cross for Alberto Rodriguez to seal the game in Mohun Bagan‘s favor. The assist was an inch-perfect delivery as he lofted a perfectly weighted pass over the Punjab defense for Rodriguez to loop it in the goal.
A player known for his work ethic and tactical intelligence, Thapa covered a lot of ground, ensuring his presence was felt in Punjab’s defensive half. His performance and consistency will be invaluable for Mohun Bagan, who currently leads the ISL standings.
3. Pratik Chaudhri (Jamshedpur FC)
Pratik Chaudhri was the backbone of his team’s defense and the match-winner in Jamshedpur’s crucial victory against Kerala Blasters FC. The seasoned center-back delivered a commanding performance, ensuring his team maintained a clean sheet against a misfiring Kerala side.
He also made an invaluable contribution offensively, when he scored the game’s only goal following a corner set-piece. After the first contact the ball became loose in Kerala’s box, Chaudhri latched onto the ball quickly and slotted the ball into the net, becoming the difference between the sides on the night.
Chaudhri showcased his aerial dominance, timely interceptions, and ability to read the game against Kerala to the delight of the Red Miners’ fans. Chaudhri’s leadership at the back was also a key factor in his team’s improved defensive stability as they put their body on the line to stop Kerala from getting back into the game.
2. Macarton Louis Nickson (NorthEast United FC)
The Highlanders left-winger delivered a stellar performance against reigning champions Mumbai City FC. The 20-year-old winger was deployed as a centre attacking midfielder and played with a lot of confidence, combining pace and flair to torment the Mumbai defense.
With the Highlanders holding a narrow lead, Macarton set up Ajaraie with a deft pass inside the six-yard box, who converted with aplomb. The 20-year-old then chipped in and closed the game out for NorthEast United with a goal for himself to make it 3 on the night for his team.
The goal came from a short but quick dribble which helped him get away from his marker and convert on the second time of asking after his first attempt was blocked. Nickson’s contributions showcase his vision to set up his teammate for an easy finish and also score himself when opportunities present themselves.
Known for his versatility, Nickson has shown his ability to play across the front line. His performance was a reminder of the immense potential he holds as a future star in Indian football.
1. Sunil Chhetri (Bengaluru FC)
If anyone knows how to turn back time over and over again, it’s the Bengaluru FC skipper, who was back on the scoresheet. His goal against Chennaiyin FC again proved why he remains an icon in Indian football and still one of the best headers of football in the league.
In a must-win match to keep up with league leaders Mohun Bagan, Chhetri stepped up with another decisive goal after nodding home from Ryan Williams’ lovely cross. His goal was a classic poacher’s effort, as he capitalized on Chennayin‘s defensive lapses and scored his 9th goal of the season.
Beyond his goal, Chhetri once again showed leadership and work rate leading his team to shrug off first-half defensive woes to shut up shop in the second half. He dropped deep to link up play, encouraged his teammates, and ensured they maintained their focus. At 40, Chhetri continues to defy father time and remains the mercurial figure and essential to Bengaluru FC’s success.
