Kerala Blasters FC rope in Spanish striker Koldo Obieta Alberdi ahead of new season

Kerala Blasters FC has always been a club that has been characterised by its top foreign additions in the attack. The club has seen a platter of international players who dominated in breaching the opponent’s goal and stood out as a top contender for the Golden Boot race, season after season.
From Ogbeche to Alvaro Vasquez, Dimitrios Diamantakos to Jesus Jiminez, the fans have got a goal galore with the scoring boots of these versatile strikers.
Ever since the Blasters mutually parted ways with their Spanish striker, Jesus Jiminez, citing the uncertainties regarding the Indian Super League (ISL), the club was in search of a new striker to spearhead their attack. The delay in the signing of a new striker significantly added to the growing discontent and the frustration of the fans.
However, the Blasters fans can now have a sigh of relief as they have signed the 31-year-old Spanish centre-forward, Koldo Obieta Alberdi, for the upcoming season. He joined the Blasters on a one-year deal, arriving from Real Unión. The striker will join the club during their pre-season camp, ahead of the Super Cup campaign in Goa, which is all set to begin on the 7th of October.

Koldo Obieta Alberdi’s career at a glance

Obieta developed his football at his local hometown club, Gernika Club, where he played during his U-19 days, before making his senior debut in 2012. His breakthrough came in the 16/17 season when he left Zamudio SD to join SD Amorebieta, where he netted 13 goals in his 34 appearances for the club.
His performance at Amorebieta impressed SD Elbar B, where he signed later and scored 9 goals in 64 appearances. He then moved to CD Tudelano, where, after a passable performance, he joined Amorebieta once again, this time finding the back of the net 11 times and assisting on 7 different occasions.
Later, he moved to Poland, where, after a brief stint at Miedz Legnica in the Polish second division. Later, he made his move back to Spain, where he played for AD Alcorcon and lastly for Real Union FC.

Koldo Obieta brings in the much-needed flair in Kerala’s attack
Koldo Obieta now joins Kerala Blasters FC from Real Union FC on a one-year contract that keeps him at the club till the end of the 2025-26 season. The striker brings in his proven goal-scoring instincts and experience in the Spanish leagues to the Blasters roster.
In addition to his physical presence, the player possesses good positioning, aerial threat, and finishing abilities both on transitions and within the box. In recent seasons, he has also shown versatility by fitting in effectively with a variety of forward positions inside his team’s systems.
With over 50 goals and 12 assists throughout his club career, Obieta will be the new guiding light for the Blasters, who would bolster their attack.
