The Shers registered a 3-0 victory against Mumbai
Punjab FC stunned the reigning ISL champions, as they defeated Mumbai City FC by three goals to nil in their backyard. The Shers, coming off a defeat just three days prior, showed great intent and dedication throughout the game, as they handed Mumbai their first home defeat since February.
Punjab’s Argentinian winger Ezequiel Vidal gave the Shers the lead in the dying minutes of the first half, which was doubled on by a penalty strike by Luka in the 53rd minute.
Mumbai’s attempts to make a late comeback into the game were cut short once and for all by Bakenga, who scored his maiden league goal in the 84th minute.
I dedicate this win to our President and our Technical Director Nikolaos Topoliatis: Panagiotis Dilmperis
Talking about this historic win, Punjab FC head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis expressed his delight, and also dedicated the win to Punjab FC management.
“I dedicate this win to our President and our Technical Director Nikolaos Topoliatis, who have managed and transformed this club in the last five years, into a team that is able to win an away game against the ISL Champions.” said the Greek head coach.
What makes this win even more special for Punjab FC, is the little time that was available for them to prepare for this fixture. Speaking regarding this short preparation period, Panagiotis Dilmperis said, “We didn’t have a lot of time, so there was a lot of mind work. The players had to adapt and understand what Mumbai does, and how we can solve the problems that happen during the game”.
With this win, Punjab FC now sit fourth in the league table and have a chance to enter the top three if they win their game in hand. Dilmperis and his side look in great shape at the moment, and also with Bakenga having now found the net, the Shers will hope that he finds renewed confidence in himself, and starts expressing himself better in front of the goal.
