Sahil Tavora’s return to FC Goa marked an important chapter in his career. After a successful stint with Hyderabad FC, culminating in the iconic ISL 2021-22 title win where he scored the crucial equalizer in the final, Sahil Tavora spent the latter half of last season on loan at Punjab FC.
Finally, he signed for the Gaurs becoming their 9th signing of the season and reuniting with Coach Manolo Marquez and former teammates Mohammad Yasir, Odei Onaindia and others.
Despite getting interest from several ISL clubs, including his former loan destination, Tavora chose to return to his roots, signifying a deep-rooted connection with the club where he first made his mark. This move represents a homecoming for the talented midfielder but also signifies his ambition to contribute to FC Goa in the Indian Super League.
Sahil Tavora sat down with Khel Now for an exclusive interview after FC Goa’s match against Hyderabad FC where he discussed various topics ranging from his transition to playing under Manolo Marquez. Here are some excerpts from the interview.
On transition to FC Goa
Transitioning from one club to another requires players to adapt to new environments and build chemistry with new teammates. Sahil Tavora had played for Hyderabad FC and was then sent on loan to Punjab FC. At the beginning of the season, the defensive midfielder signed for the Gaurs reuniting him with former teammates like Mohammad Yasir, Odei Onaindia and former coach Manolo Marquez.
“Yeah I have moved from Hyderabad to Punjab FC and now to Goa. The transition, to be honest, it’s been good. It feels great Going back to Goa, I have played here before, Plus it’s my home team so I’m comfortable there. I’ve worked with the coach and the staff too before and players like Yasir, Odei, etc. The transition has been smooth. It’s taken a while to get into the team and used to this but now I’m happy that I’m playing regularly and winning games.”
On his personal goals for the season
Setting and achieving personal goals is crucial for the growth and development of any athlete. Sahil already has a goal and an assist to his name this season.
“I think it’s just to take it game by game. You can’t rush into things and I realize that I’m an important part of the team so that’s a positive sign. And I’m playing regularly and trying to help the team whenever I can if I’m starting or even if I’m coming on, my main aim is to get the win. So the last four games have been good for us and we have to keep going.” Sahil stated.
On offensive contributions
Certain games demand more from defensive midfielders. In such situations, They are no longer just ball-winners; they have to take up the responsibility of initiating attacks. Sahil Tavora who is known for not just initiating attacks but also attempting long-range shots spoke about his offensive contributions.
“Even though offensively I try and help whenever I can I usually prefer playing in the holding midfielder role. It’s more of a defensive work but like you said I would love to score and contribute too. Overall I’m just trying to do my job whenever I’m asked by Coach Manolo and I try to give my best. Whatever is required of me, I try and do my job.” The midfielder asserted.
On the importance of communication
As a midfielder one should be able to understand the game, react to different situations, and adjust their playing style accordingly. Whether it’s playing a deeper role, or pushing further up that’s where communication comes into the picture. Sahil believes that this communication with his other teammates has indeed been easy for him.
“We have experienced players like Sandesh and Odei at the back all day, And even Aakash and Jay, They’re good at defending and always aim to keep a clean sheet. While Carl, I kind of form this square in the middle of the park. They are all experienced players so it’s very important to communicate especially in the middle. Communication Is important and their experience only makes it easier for us to communicate” he opined.
On adapting to different formations.
Sahil who can take up different roles In the midfield emphasized his ability to thrive in various tactical systems. He stated that This adaptability is a key factor in seamlessly integrating into different teams and playing styles.
“Well, The formations are changing constantly. So I try to adapt to it. And it’s important too especially to fit into different styles. The coach always has different formations and plans for every game. As a team, we just try to stick to the plan and do our best to win the games.”
On working with Manolo Marquez for the second time
Sahil Tavora’s reunion with Manolo Marquez at FC Goa was something every Hyderabad FC and FC Goa fan looked forward to. Tavora played a key role in Hyderabad FC’s 2021-22 title win under Manolo Marquez. He also expressed his admiration to work with Manolo Marquez again at FC Goa.
“I know him very well. I have been working with him for a long now, Even when we were at Hyderabad FC, he’s been the same as he is now. He’s a very demanding coach and that’s something I like and admire actually. He’s pushing me to be a better player every day and I just try to improve every day and do my job for the team. He and the coaching staff trust me a lot so I have to repay that faith on the pitch.” He concluded.
