Sunil Chhetri calls for justice for Jeyaraj and Fenix
The Indian football captain took to twitter to raise his concern over the issue.
Indian superstar Sunil Chhetri took to social media to demand justice for shopkeeper Jeyaraj and his son Fenix, who died in police custody in Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu. The father and son were arrested for allegedly keeping their shop open past the permitted hours, with a lockdown still being imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus.
They were kept in police custody overnight and died a few days later within hours of each other. The family of the two men have accused the police of brutally beating them and subjecting the men to torture in custody.
As the incident began gaining increased attention on social media, there was massive outrage as people were baffled and incensed by the police brutality and called for justice for the father and son.
Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri asked for severe action to be taken against the cops responsible for the death of Jeyaraj and Felix. He tweeted, “What happened with Jeyaraj and Fenix is beyond acceptable. Nothing will give them their lives back, but justice should set a precedent, and a very strong one at that."
The two policemen involved in the alleged torture have been suspended. People have strongly condemned the act of police brutality and flooded Twitter with the hashtag #JusticeforJayarajandFenix, demanding strict action to be taken against the men that allegedly committed the crime.
Along with the other folks, celebrities, politicians, and sportspersons have also come out in support of the two men and their families. Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan also sent out a tweet expressing horror at the incident and asking for justice. Members of the football fraternity too have been united with the likes of Michael Soosairaj, and Edwin Sydney Vanspaul using their platform to condemn the appalling chain of events.
