Sunil Chhetri has played three games against Kuwait.
Sunil Chhetri will play his final match for the Indian football team on June 6 against Kuwait. In what is a must win 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier for the Blue Tigers, the 39-year-old will put on the jersey and captain’s armband for one final time and aim to win another match for India.
Chhetri has broken many records and is the Indian football team’s highest goal-scorer by a major margin. He’s currently on 94 goals, making him the third-highest active goal-scorer in international football – behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Chhetri will be eager to extend his tally to 95 or perhaps even more against Kuwait at the Salt Lake Stadium.
With that being said, the Bengaluru FC forward hasn’t really had the opportunity to score multiple goals against Kuwait. The major reason for that is that Chhetri has only been able to play against the Kuwait national team thrice in his international career.
The 39-year-old forward has featured in all three matches India played against Kuwait in the last year or so. The first time he played against the Blue Wave was in the 2023 SAFF Championship group game last year. He scored an amazing low volley to convert Anirudh Thapa’s corner and put India ahead in that fixture. Kuwait ultimately snatched a point, thanks to a late own goal from Anwar Ali.
Sunil Chhetri started up front for India when they faced Kuwait in the 2023 SAFF Championship final too. However, he was unable to score in what was a cagey game. He did, although, score in the penalty shootout – but of course that wouldn’t add to his international goal tally.
The 39-year-old forward was also part of the India side that defeated Kuwait at their home in the first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He couldn’t score in the clash, but helped with the link-up play and really troubled Kuwait’s backline with his proactive playing style.
Sunil Chhetri will be playing his fourth match against the Blue Wave on June 6. He will look to cap off his international career with a performance to remember against Kuwait. The skipper will be aiming to score at least one goal, and perhaps build on that to get a brace or a potential hat-trick to boost India’s chances of making it past the World Cup Qualifiers’ second round.
