'You have to give your best': India head coach Khalid Jamil hopeful of positive outcome in Unity Cup 2026

Blue Tigers will kickstart their Unity Cup campaign against Jamaica at the Valley
The Valley Stadium in South East London is gearing up to host the fourth edition of the Unity Cup 2026, where four different teams – India, Jamaica, Nigeria and Zimbabwe – are set to take part in this prestigious competition.
The Unity Cup 2026 was officially granted FIFA Tier 1 status recently, and it is a golden opportunity for the Blue Tigers to win big against strong teams and climb up the FIFA rankings.
However, ahead of the Unity Cup, Khalid Jamil’s team was hit by a major blow after former ISL Champions Mohun Bagan withdrew all of its seven players despite initially agreeing to release them. Big names like Liston Colaco, Abhishek Singh and Vishal Kaith will be some major absentees.
Ahead of the big game against Jamaica, Indian head coach Khalid Jamil and player Edmund Lalrindika briefed the media about their team’s preparation and how they are looking forward to playing against big teams.
Khalid Jamil is excited to be back in London

The Indian men’s national football team is returning to British soil for the first time in 24 years. Coincidentally, two decades ago, India, led by Stephen Constantine, faced the same opponents, Jamaica, for two international friendlies that were known as the JamIn tour.
India succumbed to a 3-0 defeat to Jamaica at Vicarage Road in Watford before playing a goalless draw at the Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton. Even back then, Jamaica were way ahead of India in FIFA rankings.
Over two decades, the rank differences are pretty similar, but Jamaica has established themselves as one of the most formidable forces in the CONCACAF region. Jamaica even earned guest invitations to South America’s prestigious Copa America and will be a difficult team to beat for India.
Khalid said, “Its a good opportunity to play here after a long time. But this is football. No matter where you play, you have to give your best and we are hoping for a positive result.”
Lalrindika feels playing against higher-ranked teams will be good exposure

If we take a look at India’s recent opponents in the AFC Asian Cup qualification, we find out that India has played against relatively lower-ranked teams like Hong Kong, Singapore, Maldives and Bangladesh.
For the Blue Tigers, the Unity Cup will be a great opportunity to play against some of the best teams in the world. Former African champions Nigeria have regularly competed in FIFA World Cup, India’s immediate opponent Jamaica narrowly missed out on World Cup 2026 and even Zimbabwe is ranked higher than India.
East Benal star Edmund Lalrindika feels that it will be a good opportunity for young player to showcase their talent infront of the world against top guns.
Edmund Lalrindika said, “Its a good exposure for us and good experience for us. Its an opportunity for us to test ourselves when we play against high ranked teams. So we would be looking forward for a positive outcome. I also appeal all the Indian fans here in London to come in large number and support us.”

East Bengal lad wants to win the Unity Cup for India
Edmund Lalrindika has recently come after winning India’s topmost honour with East Bengal after 22 years, and he has been in excellent form for the Red and Gold Brigade, even scoring in the famous Kolkata derby against arch-rivals Mohun Bagan.
In the absence of Manvir and Liston and given his form, there are high chances that the Mizoram lad would start for India in the next game. He feels that it would be really great to win the Unity Cup, but also cautioned that there are far better teams than India in the Unity Cup 2026, so it won’t be an easy one.
Edmund Lalrindika said, “It would really be great to win the Unity Cup. After all, there are so many big teams. But it won’t be easy at all to compete against such big teams. But we are really optimistic, and we are hoping for the best.”
