The teenage sensation received special mention following his dazzling performance against the Nizams.

The Indian Super League (ISL) continues to be a nurturing ground for young Indian prodigies and Kerala Blasters FC‘s Korou Singh is living proof of those claims. The 17-year-old becomes the latest Indian teenage sensation following his eye-catching performance against Hyderabad FC in matchweek 8.

The Manipur native made history against the Nizams after becoming the youngest player ever to debut for the Tuskers at the age of 17 years and 340 days. Singh also became the youngest player to register an assist in the history of the league. His performance was the lone bright spark for the Manjappada in Thursday’s 1-2 loss to Hyderabad.

Korou Singh: One for the Future

The performance was highlighted by Blasters’ Swedish head coach Mikael Stahre who shared his excitement about the player. He stated, “Of course, I see him as a really big talent; he has been with us a few weeks; he came back from the national team, and he impressed in training sessions and also in reserve games, so he came in well against Mumbai City FC, and it was a quite easy decision for me to play him in this game…But you will definitely see more of him in the future.”

While Stahre had to substitute the prodigious winger in the 55th minute, the Swede is looking forward to Singh’s bright future. Protecting the pacy fleet-footed winger will be on top of Stahre’s agenda as he looks to revive the Blasters’ season to life.

Sparkling performance justifies Stahre’s faith

The teenage sensation was a menace for the Nizam defenders throughout the game. While the result was not what coach Stahre wanted, Singh’s inspired hour-long cameo will be a huge positive. The Manipur native also seems to have settled in quickly and is already bonding with the senior players at the club.

An example of his seamless integration into the squad would be Kerala’s 13th-minute opening goal, where Singh shrugged off his defender and placed the ball on a plate for striker Jesus Jimenez with a beautiful cut-back. While he ran out of legs around the hour mark, Stahre knew he had a gem of a player in his hands.

Can Korou Singh help the Blasters turn the season around?

The Blasters failed to capture three important points at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi against Hyderabad. A win would have been significant for the Tuskers to put some wiggle room between them and the Nizams. The defeat leaves Kerala in the 10th spot with a three-point gap between them and the playoff positions, which could further extend at the end of this match week.

The emergence of Korou Singh could be a catalyst of significant proportions for the Tuskers, who will be facing Chennaiyin FC, FC Goa and Bengaluru FC in their next three games. While given their current form, coach Stahre will be hoping young Korou Singh will be the inspiration for his side and guide them to an unlikely ISL playoff spot this season.
