ATK Mohun Bagan announce the signing of centre-back Brendan Hamill
The defender has previously won the AFC Champions League in his career.
ATK Mohun Bagan announced the signing of Brendan Hamill on Thursday. The 29-year-old will be joining the club on a two-year deal. Reportedly, he is the replacement of Tiri, who suffered a long-term injury during the AFC Cup 2022. The Australian's introduction shall be a massive boost for the club ahead of the next round of AFC Cup matches and the Indian Super League 2022/23.
Hamill’s statement
On joining the club, Brendan Hamill said, “The information which I have received about Indian football states ATK Mohun Bagan to be a historic club. The legacy of the Green & Maroon jersey has enriched the sport in the country. Although, I had offers from other clubs, this was what compelled me to join the club.”
The central defender also opined on his ambition. He quipped, “My aim is to win trophies for ATK Mohun Bagan and make them successful. I have heard about the popularity and craze of football in Kolkata. This club has millions of supporters. My ambition will be to make the Mariners happy.”
Juan Ferrando speaks
ATK Mohun Bagan head coach was in full praise while describing his new addition. Juan Ferrando asserted, “The reason behind selecting Hamill was that he is not only a dependable character in the defensive third, but also someone who can build up play from the back. Hamill will be helpful during the tough times the defence has to face.”
The tactician added, “I have seen him play in the A-League. His experience will enrich the side.”
About the player
Last season, Hamill played for Melbourne Victory and ended up as the runners-up of the A-League. He has mostly plied his trade in Australia. Notably, the 29-year-old played in the Korean league as well, apart from the Club World Cup. Other than Melbourne Victory, Hamill has played for A-League clubs such as Western Sydney Wanderers, Melbourne City and Western United.
In his career, the centre-back has made 180 appearances and surprisingly, has scored 10 goals as well. However, the most notable accolade for the defender is winning the AFC Champions League with Western Sydney Warriors back in 2013/14.
Hamill boasts of the reputation of playing in under-age competitions for Australian national team as well. A total of 30 appearances are recorded under his name for the U-17 and U-20 sides.
ATK Mohun Bagan’s preparations for ISL 2022/23
The Mariners are working very well in the transfer market. They have roped in goalkeeper Vishal Kaith recently as their new signing. A few days back the club announced the arrival of right-back Asish Rai and left-winger Ashique Kuruniyan. The team-building process sums up the agenda of ATK Mohun Bagan – winning the AFC Cup. However, they still need to fulfil their foreign contingent. Among the departures, David Williams and Roy Krishna have left the club. The Mariners have also extended Kiyan Nassiri’s contract.
