Only a handful of players have scored a hat-trick but still ended up losing.

Out of 200 players, five players who have scored a hat-trick in the Premier League have ended up on the losing team. A single unhappy star has done it twice. Imagine the rage in the locker room after a game when you scored three goals and had to confront your challenged opponents.

For nothing, all that ability to score goals. After filtering out the records, we looked into these five disappointed stars.

Players to score hat-trick for losing side in Premier League

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

6. Matt Le Tissier (Southampton v Oldham, 1993)

In May 1993, Oldham vs. Southampton was one of those rare games where everyone came out on top. Le Tissier excluded. Le Tissier was let free at Boundary Park following the strain of keeping Southampton afloat.

His three goals came from a header, a fantastic free kick, and a volley. However, it was not enough as Oldham eventually won the game.

5. Matt Le Tissier (Southampton v Nottm Forest, 1995)

In August of 1995, Le Tissier began to doubt everything. The Saints scored four against Nottingham Forest on a summer’s day at The Dell, with concerns about another relegation struggle still far off.

Despite scoring two penalties and another free kick, Le Tissier was unable to stop the loss. It was just the second time the forward’s treble was not enough to save his side from a defeat.

4. Dion Dublin (Coventry v Sheff Weds, 1995)

Two early Premier League mainstays, Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday, had a thrilling match at Hillsborough in December 1995.

You can understand why Dublin’s triple wasn’t as easy as it should have been—the Sky Blues had only won once that season.

Three legitimate centre-forward goals were scored by Dublin: a tap-in, two headers, including a glancing and thumping goal. However, Wednesday’s Mark Bright victory stole the show.

3. Dwight Yorke (Aston Villa v Newcastle, 1996)

Despite having the firepower to defeat Dwight Yorke and Villa, Newcastle’s defensive weaknesses were still visible in this September game. Yorke was rampant that day. He recorded a treble, but the Magpies managed to scrape to a win.

The linesman’s flag was the only thing that prevented him from scoring a fourth and a late equaliser.

2. Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn v Wigan, 2007)

Even though he spent a number of years at Bayern Munich, one successful season for Mark Hughes’ Blackburn in 2007–08 solidified his cult reputation in England.

That year, the Paraguayan scored 23 goals, 19 of them in the Premier League, including this futile hat-trick against Wigan in December. Wigan’s Marcus Bent, who also recorded a hat-trick, outshone Santa Cruz as Rovers lost 5-3.

1. Brian Brobbey (Sunderland v Man City, 2026)

With a busy appearance that belies a more subtle striker underneath, Brobbey has quickly emerged as one of our favourite Premier League players.

Even though the Black Cats lost five at the other end, scoring a hat-trick against Manchester City at the Etihad validated all those summer transfer rumours to larger teams overseas.

Additionally, it was the first time a Sunderland player had scored three goals in a Premier League match since Jermain Defoe in 2016.

Which player scored two hat-tricks in different Premier League games but still lost?

Matt Le Tissier for Southampton.

Who is the latest player to score a hat-trick in a Premier League game but still suffer a defeat?

Brian Brobbey for Sunderland.
