Spain vs Argentina Preview - Prediction, team news, lineups | FIFA World Cup 2026 Final

La Roja are locking horns with La Albiceleste after almost eight years.

After the successful conclusion of the semifinals, the FIFA World Cup 2026 has its two finalists in Spain and Argentina. The game will be played at the New York-New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford. It is coincidentally the same stadium where Argentina lost to Chile 10 years ago, following which Lionel Messi retired from the national team.

Argentina are yet to lose a game in the FIFA World Cup 2026. They were perfect throughout the group stages. They got the job done during the knockout stages as well.

Their semi-final was a close 2-1 win over England. La Albiceleste came from behind to book their place in the final. Lionel Messi and Lionel Scaloni have played their respective roles as the captain and manager to absolute perfection, which has helped Argentina outperform expectations.

Spain, on the other hand, are the reigning European champions. They are coming into this game after knocking out one of the favourites, France, in the semi-finals.

They started their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a disappointing 0-0 draw against Cape Verde, but grew into the tournament ever since. They have statistically been the strongest defensive team in the World Cup. They have only conceded a single goal.

In this article, we will be looking at the five key battles to watch during the FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Spain and Argentina.

5. Fabián Ruiz vs Enzo Fernández

Both Fabián Ruiz and Enzo Fernández operate in the midfield and play similar roles for their respective teams. Both can control the tempo of the game. They also contribute massively to both attack and defence.

Fabián Ruiz overtook Pedri in the pecking order. He became the starter during the knockout stages. He even scored against Belgium in the Quarter-finals.

Enzo Fernández, on the other hand, scored the winner against Egypt. He equalised against England in the semi-finals.

4. Dani Olmo vs Leandro Paredes

Dani Olmo has been incredible during the entire World Cup so far. He has emerged as one of the most important players in Spain‘s attack. He assisted Pedro Porro in the semifinals against France.

He has been a smart presence in the pockets of space. He will engage in a midfield battle with Argentina’s Leandro Paredes. The Argentine has performed brilliantly for La Albiceleste.

He is excellent on a technical level. Paredes is a consistent defender in one-on-one situations.

3. Pau Cubarsí vs Julián Álvarez

The third entry on our list is a contest between Pau Cubarsí and Julián Álvarez.

Pau Cubarsí has arguably been the best defender of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Being just 18 makes his performances even more impressive. He plays a key role during the build-up and has the physicality to defend very well.

Julián Alvarez, on the other hand, is one of the best strikers in the world. He was having a disappointing World Cup campaign. Everything changed when he scored an extra-time screamer to secure Argentina‘s win over Switzerland.

2. Lamine Yamal vs Nicolás Tagliafico

Lamine Yamal arrived at this World Cup after having the best season of his young career. He has not been up to the mark in the final third but has impressed with his overall performance. He is a tricky dribbler to contain, who can move past you in an instant.

Nicolás Tagliafico is a solid defensive fullback. He is playing his third FIFA World Cup as a starter. He makes forward runs at times as well, but even he will struggle to neutralise Lamine Yamal.

1. Rodri vs Lionel Messi

Topping our list is an individual battle that might decide the fate of this game, involving Rodri and Lionel Messi.

La Pulga has already registered eight goals and four assists in the FIFA World Cup 2026. He will be motivated to lead his country to their fourth-ever World Cup title.

Despite being 39, Lionel Messi is still considered the best player in the world by many. One can’t argue against his heroics in the ongoing campaign.

Rodri has arguably been Spain’s best player. He effortlessly dominated the midfield against Portugal and France alike. Rodri will have the responsibility of containing the maestro Messi, as he can impact the game at any time.
