Can Murat Yakin’s predecessor, former Swiss gaffer Vladimir Petković, knock Switzerland out of the FIFA World Cup 2026?

BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, gears up to host the Round of 32 fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where European giants Switzerland and two-time African champions Algeria lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest.

Rossocrociati are coming after topping Group B with wins over Bosnia and hosts Canada. After a frustrating 1-1 draw with reigning Asian champions Qatar, Switzerland secured two back-to-back wins to occupy the top spot, unbeaten with seven points. Murat Yakin’s side has scored seven and have conceded thrice so far.

Ranked 19th in the latest FIFA rankings, the Alpine nation have failed to advance past the Round of 16 since 1954. They have an excellent squad boasting big names like Dortmund’s Kobel between the sticks, UCL-winning defender Akanji, captain Granit Xhaka of Sunderland, and their top scorer, Manzambi, up front.

Algeria’s qualification hopes were swinging like a pendulum in their last fixture against Ralf Rangnick’s Austria. Despite settling for a 3-3 draw, the Mediterranean nation qualified as one of the best third-ranked teams at FIFA World Cup 2026 after finishing behind Argentina and Austria in Group J.

After a horrific start, succumbing to a 3-0 defeat to Argentina after Messi’s hat-trick, the two-time AFCON champions defeated Jordan 2-1 before playing a six-goal thriller against Austria. They are led by Vladimir Petkovic, who has previously served as Switzerland’s coach for seven years.

The winner of this game will lock horns with either South American giants Colombia or African powerhouse Ghana in the Round of 16 clash on 7 July at the same venue.

The Round of 32 brings a fierce, knockout intensity where reputations matter less than 90 minutes of pure desire. The tournament enters a phase where absolute underdogs can stun football giants. Fans can expect a thrilling, high-stakes battle where any result is possible and either side has everything it takes to win.

Players to Watch

Manuel Akanji (Switzerland)

A mathematical genius, Manuel Akanji is widely recognised for his incredible mental arithmetic skills off the pitch and his elite, world-class defending. He rose to prominence after winning the treble with Manchester City and cemented his legacy as one of the finest defenders in European football.

He is coming after spending a loan spell with Inter Milan, where he went on to win the Serie A and the Coppa Italia. The Neftenbach-born defender will be up against a strong Algerian attack led by Riyad Mahrez and Marseille’s Amine Gouiri.

Rayan Ait-Nouri (Algeria)

Born in the eastern suburbs of Paris, Ait Nouri represented the Les Blues youth setup before pledging his allegiance to Algeria. After playing his trade with Wolverhampton Wanderers, the 25-year-old fullback made a high-profile move to his new home at the Etihad with Manchester City.

He started two games so far and was benched in the last game against Canada. He is a highly technical, modern and fluid attacking fullback who will be up against Granit Xhaka and Sow. The former Angers fullback will be keen to dominate the left flank and contribute offensively too.
