How can Uruguay football team line up for their international friendly against India?
La Celeste will face the Blue Tigers in Kolkata.
The Uruguay football team will take on India in a historic FIFA international friendly at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK), Kolkata, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. This will mark the final friendly for both sides in the current international window.
La Celeste faced South Korea at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in their previous friendly fixture. The South American giants secured a convincing 4-1 win. Darwin Núñez scored a solid brace, while Giorgian de Arrascaeta found the back of the net as well.
This marked their first win in their last five games across all competitions. Under new head coach Diego Forlan, La Celeste will need to secure another win on the road against India. The visitors will be heavy favourites against an Indian side that was beaten 0-4 by Brazil.
GK: Santiago Mele
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
While Christopher Fiermarin looks like Diego Forlan’s No. 1 goalkeeper at the moment, the clash against India will be a good opportunity for the head coach to give some playing time to backup goalkeeper Santiago Mele.
He played 90 minutes in the loss against Japan on September 24 and will hope for a better outing in Kolkata.
RB: Santiago Mouriño
Guillermo Varela played the entire 90 minutes against South Korea, but Forlan will likely give Villarreal full-back Santiago Mouriño an outing against India.
After enjoying a solid campaign with the Yellow Submarine in La Liga, the 24-year-old will hope to impress on what would be just his second international appearance.
CB: Ronald Araújo
Having returned to full fitness after moving to Liverpool, Ronald Araújo will look to captain Uruguay in the upcoming fixture.
The former Barcelona captain played the full 90 minutes against South Korea, registering a solid performance. He will hope to keep a clean sheet and neutralise the threat posed by Ryan Williams and Manvir Singh.
CB: Juan Rodríguez
While Napoli left-back Mathías Olivera started both games in this international window so far, the injury he sustained after the game against South Korea has forced him to withdraw from the squad for the India friendly.
Juan Rodríguez, the 21-year-old left-back, is expected to get his first start under Diego Forlán after the Cagliari defender spent the last two games on the bench.
Although not particularly good offensively, he is solid defensively, with his aerial prowess and positional awareness being his key strengths. He is not just a proactive defender who lunges forward to win duels, but also an extremely technical player on the ball with his passing abilities.
LB: Joaquín Piquerez
Palmeiras full-back Joaquín Piquerez has established himself as Forlan’s No. 1 choice on the left side of defence.
The 28-year-old left-back was solid against South Korea, and Forlan will stick with him. He will need to be at his very best to deal with Williams in front of him. His pace and crossing ability will also be key going forward.
CM: Lucas Torreira
Lucas Torreira will be the beating heart of the Uruguayan midfield, utilizing his passing abilities to create chances for the attackers.
Torreira dictated the tempo of the game against South Korea and will hope for a similar performance against the Blue Tigers. He has not scored for club and country in the last five matches and will look to end that run tomorrow.
CM: Rodrigo Bentancur
Rodrigo Bentancur has been one of the few bright spots for Tottenham Hotspur in their rotten season, and the central midfielder has played the majority of the minutes in his nation’s last two friendlies.
He has formed a near-telepathic relationship with Torreira in the middle of the park, and the pair will surely enjoy their battle against Anirudh Thapa and Apuia.
RW: Facundo Pellistri
Brian Rodriguez played the entire 90 minutes against South Korea, but Forlan will likely start with former Manchester United winger Facundo Pellistri.
The 24-year-old attacker played just six minutes against Japan and will look to impress the head coach and nail down a more permanent spot with the national team.

CAM: Giorgian de Arrascaeta
Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored a goal and provided an assist against South Korea. The Flamengo midfielder is one of the most important players for Forlan’s attacking setup and will link up the two halves of the Uruguayan team.
He will also look to make the most of his outing against the Indian centre-back pairing, who will be rattled after conceding four times against Brazil.
LW: Maxi Araújo
Sporting CP full-back Maxi Araújo will be deployed on the wing by Forlan, as he was against Japan and South Korea.
He has been superb in the current international window, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the last two matches. He has also been in superb form in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, and will be one of the biggest threats to the home side’s defence.
ST: Darwin Núñez

After a quiet night against Japan, Darwin Núñez responded with two goals against South Korea.
The former Liverpool man has also scored three goals in five matches for Al-Diriyah. He will be the focal point of the visitors’ attack and hope for a goalscoring outing in Kolkata.
