Newcastle United have sealed their sixth summer signing ahead of the Premier League 2026-27 season, with Benfica’s Amar Dedic moving to St. James’ Park. The Magpies will pay £29.5 million for the Bosnian right-back, who signed a five-year contract at his new club.
Dedic signed the deal on Tuesday after completing his medical the previous day. After losing several big names over the summer, including influential club captain Bruno Guimarães, the Saudi-owned club have made a big statement of intent with Dedic’s capture.
“Working with Matthias (Jaissle) again was a big factor for me,” Dedic said. “We know each other well; he knows what I can bring to the pitch and I’m really happy to play for him again. It’s a special feeling and a real honour to join Newcastle.”
Dedic will likely need to be ready to start for Newcastle United in their Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 23. Following the departure of Kieran Trippier at the end of last season, Tino Livramento is the only senior right-back at Jaissle’s disposal. However, Livramento is yet to recover from a calf injury, putting the spotlight on Dedic.

Amar Dedic’s career so far
Born in Austria to Bosnian parents, Dedic began his career in the youth academy of the local club LUV Graz. In 2012, he moved to Sturm Graz before transferring to Red Bull Salzburg’s academy in 2015.
He became part of the second-division side FC Liefering, which is Salzburg’s feeder club. He made his senior debut at the age of 16. He made 50 appearances across two seasons with Liefering.
He signed a new contract with Salzburg and made his debut for the Austrian Bundesliga side in a cup game against Bregenz in September 2020. He was sent on a season-long loan to Wolfsberger AC, making 32 appearances.
Dedic made his league debut for Salzburg in the 2022-23 season. He also took part in the UEFA Champions League. He made 60 appearances for the Austrian giants, scoring four goals. He departed on a six-month loan to Marseille in February 2025.
At the end of the 2024-25 season, Dedic sealed a permanent transfer to Portuguese side Benfica for €12 million. He made 25 appearances for the Eagles during his only season at Estadio da Luz, catching Newcastle’s eye and earning a move to the Premier League.
Despite being born in Austria, Dedic represented Bosnia and Herzegovina from the U-17 level onwards. He made his senior international debut in 2022, playing in a friendly against Luxembourg. To date, he has earned 31 caps, scoring a solitary goal.
