Austria vs Jordan: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

Elite players in top Asian and top European leagues lock horns in World Cup opener in Santa Clara
Framed by the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains, the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium (Levi’s Stadium) in Santa Clara, USA, gears up to host the opening match week fixture of Group J in the FIFA World Cup 2026, where European outfit Austria takes on debutants Jordan in what is set to be a thrilling encounter.
The last time Austria played the World Cup was way back in 1998 and they return to the grandest stage of football after nearly three decades. They are the only European team in Group J and also one of the favourites to advance past the group stages.
The Austrians are led by German gaffer Ralf Rangnick, who has previously been at the helm of RB Leipzig and Manchester United. They are one of the favourites to reach the knockouts in a group that includes Jordan, Argentina and Algeria.
Jordanian football is at an all-time high. After making it to the AFC Asian Cup Finals in the last edition, Jordan went through gruelling AFC Qualifiers to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever.
Though many of their players do not have that European pedigree, they are a very new team and can be very unpredictable against Austria.
This is set to be a closely contested fixture, with key player battles determining the outcome. Will Austria’s star-studded defensive lineup manage to get the better of Jordan, or will the debutants pull one of the biggest upsets against Austria in the opener? We shall find that out soon.

5. David Alaba vs Ali Olwan

Arguably, the greatest player Austria has ever produced in the modern era, Alaba, is a four-time UEFA Champions League winner with two of the biggest clubs in world football, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. He is a world-class, ball-playing centre-back, who reads the game flawlessly.
Olwan competes in Qatari Stars League and it would be nothing less than a nightmare for the Al Sailiya striker to get past the Austrian legend and score a goal on Jordan’s World Cup debut.
4. Phillipp Mwene vs Mousa Tamari
Both players compete in top European League. Mousa Al Tamari also nicknamed the Jordanian Messi is in terrific form and is coming after a productive spell with Rennes in the Ligue 1. His overlapping and accelerated runs from the right flank can be a big threat for Austria.
Mwene is also coming after a productive spell with Mainz 05 in Bundesliga. He will be tasked with the responsibility to contain Tamari but matching his speed and pace would be challenging for Mwene.
3. Marko Arnautovic vs Yazan Al Arab
Arnautovic may be 37, but he is still very lethal and clincial upfront. The Austrian striker has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world like Inter Milan and West Ham before making a move to FK Crvena Zvezda in the Serbian top flight.
Al Arab is the defensive heartbeat of the team, and his commanding presence in the backline helped Jordan make a fairytale run to the finals of the AFC Asian Cup 2023. He is one of the highly respected Middle Eastern defenders playing in the fast-paced and highly technical Korean top flight
2. Marcel Sabitzer vs Noor Al-Rawabdeh

He has previously plied his trade with top European clubs like Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, and in 2023 made a move to Borussia Dortmund, where he also played a key role in propelling them to the UCL Finals in 2024.
Al Rawabdeh plays for Malaysian outfit Selangor and will have to use his physical strength to dominate the midfield and provide defensive stability to Jordan in the middle of the park.
1. Alexander Schlager vs Yazeed Abulaila
Alexander Schlager is coming after a productive spell with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. Austria’s established No. 1. Rangnick relies heavily on his composure and his ability to clear danger quickly. His quick reflexes makes him the best person Austria could have asked for to defend their post.
Yazeed Abulaila plays for Jordanian outfit Al-Hussein SC and surprisingly, he even has an assist to his name in the AFC Champions League 2 when he collected the ball in his penalty area and launched a long-distance pass and Obieda Al-Namarneh scored a goal.
