Top three players with Biggest gaps between first two European goals

These players took even more than a decade to score another major European goal.

Scoring goals in major European competitions is one of the best feelings. We have had many such great players who have scored a record number of goals in European tournaments. Performing on European nights and delivering top performance is one of the best highlights for some players’ careers.

However, in this competition, we have also witnessed many players who have failed to score for many years across the competitions.

In this piece, we have listed three players who have taken years or precisely even more than a decade, to score their second goal in a major European competition.

NOTE: Goals of only the main tournaments are included, not of qualifying games.

The biggest gaps between the first two major European goals for a player

3. Chris Wood (2011 – 2025): 13 years, 347 days

Chris Wood had to wait 13 years to score his second goal in a major European competition, after netting his first goal in the Europa League in a 2-1 victory for Birmingham City in 2011. However, he could have scored his second goal when he was playing for Burnley. Although the team was competing in the Europa League qualifying phase, they failed to secure their place in the competition.

Although it may have taken Wood a decade to score his second goal, he has finally done so in a Nottingham Forest shirt. The sad part is that it came in their 3-2 defeat to Danish club Midtjylland on Friday.

2. Mark Wright (1982 – 1997): 14 years, 221 days

Mark Wright played for four clubs throughout his career. One of the top clubs he played for were Liverpool. He did so during the later stages of his career.

As a centre-back, Wright had a chance to perform several big European nights. His first-ever cameo came when he was playing for Southampton. Moreover, he also scored a goal in the competition, marking his first-ever goal in 1982.

However, it took him more than 14 years to score his second goal in a major European competition. This time it came in a Liverpool shirt in 1997. He found the net during the European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign.

He is still the second player to have the biggest gaps between the first two major European goals.

1. Eugenio Corini (1990 – 2005): 14 years, 347 days

Midfielders occasionally score goals, as their main task in the game is to control the momentum of the match. This is what Eugenio Corini got paid to do in the games. However, he did manage to find the back of the net when playing in European competitions.

He scored his first European goal in 1990 when he was playing for Juventus, where he spent only two seasons. After Juventus, he changed seven clubs, and his seventh club was Palermo. There, he scored his second European goal in 2005.

It took him almost 15 years to record his second goal in a major European competition.

Which clubs did Eugenio Corini play for when he scored his first two major European goals?

He played for Juventus and Palermo.

Which position did Mark Wright play in?

He played as a centre-back.
