Murphy won an Oscar for his lead role in Oppenheimer
When it comes to naming the most famous man out of Ireland, Cillian Murphy claims Roy Keane will always be ahead of him.
For his role in the epic film Oppenheimer, Murphy is a favourite to win the Best Actor Oscar. However, the 47-year-old has made light of the fact that he would never be “more famous” in his native county than Ireland’s and Manchester United’s great Keane.
Murphy joked when asked if he could be named Cork’s most well-known celebrity:
“I mean, to me, no one will be more famous than Roy Keane coming out of Cork! I’m a big Roy Keane fan, so he’s always number one for me. Sorry, Graham!”
Murphy thought back on the praise and numerous honours he had won for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer while he was appearing on RTE’s Morning Ireland.
With his position as the father of the atomic bomb, the Cork star has made a record before tonight’s major event. Oppenheimer broke records at the movies when it came out in July 2023. His performance not only brought him several accolades for the project but also landed him an appearance on the front page of the most recent issue of New Yorker Magazine.

Roy Keane is a former football player and coach who won 19 major trophies during his amazing career, 17 of which were during his time at Manchester United. With an excellent record and the undeserved attention and affection from all across the world that comes with it, Keane was named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players in history.
Murphy recently said that a few filmmakers create movies solely to enjoy it rather than for financial gain, despite the fact that the actor has garnered affection from all over the world.
I think Christopher Nolan represents one of the rare filmmakers that still takes his time in this day and age, when films are usually produced under pressure to meet box office expectations and budgets. Murphy talked about how much he truly loved performing and that it was a plus if people enjoyed his films as the interview went on. Murphy is an actor from Peaky Blinders.
