Top six clubs with most points in single Bundesliga season

Bundesliga is the top-flight football league in Germany
Winning a league is one of the most difficult feats in football. A league usually comprises of 38 games in which 20 teams compete against each other for the first spot.
But the Bundesliga has 34 games throughout the season and 18 teams. Bundesliga is one of Europe’s top five leagues and one of the best leagues in the world. Many teams such as Bayern Munich have dominated majority of the German top flight. Let’s take a look at the teams with the most points in a single Bundesliga season.
6. Bayer Leverkusen – 80*
Xabi Alonso has created a very lethal squad with Bayer Leverkusen. Alonso’s Leverkusen are not only on an unbeaten streak but have also ended Bayern Munich’s 11-year winning streak in the Bundesliga. Leverkusen had never won the Bundesliga title before in their history.
The likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Patrick Shick, Florian Wirtz and a few others have stood out tremendously. Bayer Leverkusen started their unbeaten streak against smaller teams and faced a herculean task when they were set to play against Bayern Munich.
The league fixture took place at Allianz Arena and despite the odds stacked against them, Leverkusen thrashed Bayern Munich 3-0 and showed a huge statement of intent and entually went on to win the Bundesliga in the 2023-2024 season.
5. Bayern Munich – 82 (2023-24 season)
One of Bayern Munich’s lesser known seasons but nonetheless as always the Bavarians pulled off the job. Bayern Munich won the 2018-2019 Bundesliga with a staggering 82 points.
The only heavy losses Bayern Munich faced throughout the season was against Leverkusen and Borussia M’gladbach. Eventually, Bayern beat both of those teams in the reverse fixture. Borussia Dortmund did not pose a major threat in that season as Bayern beat them 4-0 at home and 1-0 in an away match as well.
Robert Lewandowski was a key player in that season scoring 34 goals in 31 Bundesliga games which eventually became one of his highest goals tallys in the league.
4. Bayern Munich – 84 (2017-2018 season)
Borussia Dortmund are one of the most consistent teams over the years in Bundesliga to pose a threat against Bayern Munich. This was not the case in the 2017-2018 season when Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga with 84 points and the second-placed team were 19 points off the top.
Moreover, Borussia Dortmund finished fourth with just 55 points. Bayern Munich lost only three matches and thrashed rivals Borussia Dortmund 3-1 and 6-0 twice in the season. Once again, Lewandowski was a key player for Bayern Munich as he scored 29 goals. Robert also won his third Bundesliga top scorer of the season award as Bayern Munich won the league with 84 points.

3. Bayern Munich – 88 (2015-2016 season)
One of Bayern Munich’s memorable moments came back in the 2015-2016 season when they won the league with a staggering 88 points. Borussia Dortmund were doing quite well but as usual Bayern Munich bested them on both home and away fixtures.
This season was quite memorable as Robert Lewandowski broke his previous record of most goals scored in a Bundesliga season. His previous record was 24 goals and that too when he was in Borussia Dortmund. Robert Lewandowski broke the record in the 2015-2016 season. But that was not his standout moment that season.
On matchday 6 in the 2015-2016 Bundesliga season, Bayern Munich were all square with VFL Wolfsburg until Robert Lewandowski came on from the bench. The Polish striker scored 5 goals in just 9 minutes to hand Bayern Munich the victory. A stellar performance from a key player which eventually led to Bayern gaining momentum and winning the season.
2. Bayern Munich – 90 (2013-2014 season)
Pep Guardiola managed Bayern from 2013 to 2017 and led them to various Bundesliga titles. The 2013-2014 Bayern Munich squad came very close to beating Bayern’s record of most points (91) in a Bundesliga season.
Bayern Munich started very well that season. The Bavarians were on a 29-game win streak until matchday 30 and 31. Bayern eventually got back up and won the last two fixtures and ended the 2013-2014 season with a staggering 90 points. Mario Mandzukic was Bayern’s top scorer that season with 19 goals in the league.
1. Bayern Munich – 91 (2012- 2013 season)
A record which is still unbeaten till date. The 2012- 2013 Bayern Munich squad was very special. Jupp Heynckes managed Bayern Munich and led them to one of their most iconic seasons ever.
The 2012-2013 Bayern Munich squad won the UEFA Champions League title in that season. Enroute to the finals, they even beat FC Barcelona 7-0 on aggregate which was the best team in the world at that time. Heynckes managed Bayern efficiently in the Bundesliga as well.
Bayern Munich only lost once in the 2012-2013 Bundesliga season and eventually won the league with 91 points. A record which is considered the team with the highest points in the history of Bundesliga.
