England will face Belgium and Brazil in March

Ivan Toney has been summoned back for this month’s friendly against Brazil and Belgium, while Anthony Gordon and Jarrad Branthwaite have been picked up for the first time for England.

This season, Newcastle’s 23-year-old forward Gordon has scored 10 goals in all competitions, and Everton’s 21-year-old defender Branthwaite has shown promise. The 28-year-old striker Forney of Brentford makes his debut after serving an eight-month suspension for breaking FA betting regulations in January.

Ezri Konsa, a 26-year-old uncapped defender for Aston Villa, is also included in the 25-man roster.

The final games for England are against Brazil on March 23 and Belgium on March 26 at Wembley. These are coach Gareth Southgate’s penultimate matches before he announces his squad for Euro 2024.Joe Gomez, a defender who hasn’t represented England since 2020, has been added to the roster after making an impact for Liverpool this season as a left-back, centre-back, and right-back.Jordan Henderson, a former colleague at Liverpool who is currently at Ajax, has been chosen, but Kalvin Phillips, a midfielder for Manchester City on loan at West Ham, is not.Cole Palmer, an attacking player for Chelsea, is included, but Raheem Sterling, a teammate, is not.

England manager Gareth Southgate on squad depth: “In some positions we have a lot of depth, in others we’re short. Left-back is one.

“We have other players who might adjust in that role. We hope Ben Chilwell comes through this week, Luke Shaw being out is a problem for us.”

“It’s firstly great to see him playing regularly at Liverpool and he’s such a lovely boy, I’ve known him since the under-17s won in Malta when he was at Charlton.

“We love working with Joe, we’re delighted to see him back playing and we look forward to seeing him next week.”
