The Three Lions kept their Euro 2024 boat afloat with a 2-1 win.

England national football team led by Gareth Southgate have made their way to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals on the back of a 2-1 win over Slovakia in the round of 16.

The Three Lions were in a nightmare of a game although they came out on top by the end of it. In the Round of 16 clash with Slovakia, the balance of power seemed to be in favour of the Euro 2020 runners-up before the kick-off.

None would have predicted that Francesco Calzona’s team would land the early blow. Slovakia did just that by the efforts of Ivan Schranz at the 25-minute mark. The score stayed 1-0 against England and they seemingly were heading home. But Jude Bellingham popped up at the right place and with the right athleticism. Bellingham scored a bicycle kick goal in the added time to give his team a breather and Southgate some relief from anxiety.

In the extra time, Harry Kane gave them the lead and post which the score also stayed the same, 2-1.

England will face Switzerland in the quarterfinals

A 2-1 win over Slovakia allowed England to keep their boat afloat and in the competition. They have now reached the quarter-final stage and will be looking to take a step further.

Who will be their opponents in the quarterfinals? Switzerland. Although Slovakia weren’t able to send the Euro 2020 finalists home, Murat Yakin’s Switzerland did send the other a day prior.

Switzerland played against Italy, the defending champions, in the round of 16 and came out on top with a clear 2-0 win. They were the better side for the whole 90 minutes and inevitably left the mark on the scoresheet. A Remo Freuler goal from inside the box and a stunning curler from outside the box by Ruben Vargas did the job at the Olympiastadion Berlin.

The Three Lions have already had a hard time in this tournament even though their star-studded squad should suggest otherwise. Gareth Southgate and Co anyhow have made it to the quarter-finals and now will be dealing with Granit Xhaka captained A-Team at the merkur spiel arena on Saturday (July 6, 9:30 PM IST).
