Erling Haaland won the award last season

We are at the fag end of the club football calendar year. The English Premier League have meanwhile released the nominees for the Player of the Season award. It is an annual award given by the association to honour the best player in that particular season in the EPL. A panel consisting of the football governing bodies, media and fans choose the winner of this award.

Manchester City‘s striker, Erling Haaland features in the list. He is followed by his sensational teammate Phil Foden. Arsenal midfielders Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk are also part of this list. Haaland was the winner of the award in the previous season. Can he win this award in consecutive seasons? Only Cristiano Ronaldo has managed to win this award on consecutive seasons in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

In this article, we will talk about the top favourites to win the Premier League Player of the Season award, this time around.

3. Declan Rice (Arsenal)

At the start of the season, Arsenal announced the signing of Declan Rice for £100m plus £5m in add-ons. He was set to rejuvenate the midfield, making his departure from West Ham United. Boy did he do it! He has been sensational in the midfield and has also contributed to Arsenal’s attack significantly. He has already notched up 7 goals and 9 assists so far in the league.

Declan Rice has been one of the best performers in the League so far. So, don’t be surprised if the Arsenal midfielder goes on to win the Premier League player of the season award. Meanwhile, Manchester City and Arsenal are currently locked head-to-head for the Premier League title. So, it all depends on which club has the final laugh this season.

2. Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Aston Villa are having a very good season and the major part of that has been due to the performance of Ollie Watkins. He has scored 27 goals in all competitions so far this season and has 19 in the Premier League itself. He is also set to earn a call-up for the Euros as a backup for Harry Kane. Watkins would have been a hot commodity in the summer transfer window.

Many clubs would have come up with huge bids for him. However, Villa are very close to UCL qualification, and hence Watkins may stay at Aston Villa. However, he has been in sensational form this season and is a top contender for the coveted prize.

1. Phil Foden (Manchester City)

Manchester City’s legendary manager, Pep Guardiola, has carefully developed Phil Foden during his tenure as the head coach. He has backed the youngster and now Foden has been breathing fire. Manchester City have the chance of winning the Premier League this season if they don’t mess up in the upcoming games. Phil Foden has been the best player on the side. Not only has he been the best player of the Manchester side, but also the whole league.

It is almost close to certain, that Phil Foden is set to win the Player of the Season award. He has 76 goals and 8 assists in the 33 games so far in the Premier League and these are wonderful stats. Everyone predicts Foden to win the coveted prize and it will be bolstered if City go on to win the League.
