Aside from Mexico, each team in Group A had something to play for in their last group fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With all their group-stage games finished, the final rankings have been determined. Mexico finished first in Group A.
Mexico had already won top place with a 1-0 win over South Korea. Thus, El Tri had nothing to play for on the last group game, leaving Czechia, South Africa, and South Korea to compete for second place and a potential third-place berth in the round of 32.
Javier Aguirre’s decision to keep Raul Jimenez out of Mexico’s starting lineup against Czechia demonstrated the team’s calm. Additionally, in Czechia’s game against Mexico, Patrik Schick did not start. Meanwhile, South Korea made a surprising move by not starting Heung-min Son against South Africa.

Which teams qualified from Group A?
Mexico and South Africa have advanced to the round of 32 in the FIFA World Cup 2026. South Korea haven’t been eliminated yet. However, their fate is no longer in their control.
The same cannot be true for Czechia. They were eliminated with a 3-0 defeat against Mexico.
Mexico performed the best of any team in Group A, despite being the only one with nothing to play for on the final matchday. El Tri secured a flawless group stage with a 3-0 victory over Czechia, ending the first round of the 2026 World Cup with three consecutive clean sheets.
South Korea had another dismal performance again, falling to South Africa by a minimum score of 1-0. However, there’s still a possibility for them to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout round spot if other teams’ results go in their favour.
