Viola will face Olympiacos in UEFA Conference League final

At the AEK Arena in Athens on May 29, 2024, Fiorentina will play Olympiacos in the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League 2023-24. The team will hope to steer clear of a recurrence of their 2-1 final-match loss to West Ham from the previous year. Fiorentina’s offensive play, quickness, and technical proficiency are their strong points; they must make the most of these when against Olympiacos.

Fiorentina’s semifinal match ended in a 1-1 draw against Club Brugge on Wednesday, but Lucas Beltran’s late penalty gave them the advantage and guaranteed back-to-back trips to the Europa Conference League final. Fiorentina won 4-3 on aggregate.

Play-off Fiorentina 2-1 Rapid Wien (aggregate)

Fiorentina achieved Conference League qualifying by defeating Rapid Vienna 2:0 to go to reach the group stage.

Gonzalez’s goal, which was made in the ninetieth minute, guaranteed the Italian team’s passage. In the 59th minute, he also scored the game’s opening goal. They advanced because of their 2:0 victory on Thursday, despite losing the first encounter 1:0 in Vienna.

Group stage

  • Fiorentina (Italy)
  • Ferencvaros (Hungry)
  • Genk (Belgium)
  • Cukaricki (Serbia)

In the 2023-2024 UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL), Fiorentina finished ahead of Ferencvaros, Genk, and Cukaricki, topping their group. Eight groups of four teams make up the UECL, which then consists of a knockout round, round of sixteen, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.

Fiorentina finished this time on the top of the group with 12 points. The Italian side secured a direct spot in the last 16 instead of another play-off. They first drew 2-2 with Genk then followed up the same results with Ferencvaros. They hosted Cukaricki and beat them 6-0, which was their first win in the tournament.

In the away game they once again beat Cukaricki 1-0 then subsequently beat Genk 1-0 and held to 1-1 in their last group stage game against  Ferencvaros.

Round of 16: Fiorentina 5-4 Maccabi Haifa (aggregate)

In the round of sixteen of the UEFA Europa Conference League, Fiorentina defeated Maccabi Haifa 5–4 overall. In the UEFA Europa Conference League Round of 16, Fiorentina defeated Maccabi Haifa 5–4 on aggregate to advance to the quarterfinals.

Despite this draw in the second leg against Maccabi Haifa, Antonin Barak’s header was sufficient to guarantee Fiorentina a spot in the Conference League quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal: Fiorentina 2-0 Viktoria Plzen (aggregate)

With goals from Nico Gonzalez and Cristiano Biraghi, Fiorentina eventually defeated a 10-man Viktoria Plzen team, requiring extra time to get to the Conference League semifinal.

There was still plenty to play for as the opening leg ended in a scoreless draw and was Plzen’s ninth straight Conference League clean sheet. Martinez Quarta was extremely unfortunate to strike the far post with a header on a corner after Marco Davide Faraoni shot straight at the custodian.

When Ikone cleverly responded from the edge of his own penalty area and slid the ball over for Biraghi to sweep past the custodian one-on-one, the Viola doubled their lead.

Semif-final: Club Brugge 3-4 Fiorentina (aggregate)

Against Club Brugge, a last-minute penalty gave Fiorentina a point, sending them through 4-3 on aggregate and into their second straight Europa Conference League final on Wednesday.

After Maxim de Cuyper’s opening goal, Fiorentina rallied to take the lead back to one goal in the first leg of the semi-final, and Lucas Beltran pushed a penalty beyond Simon Mignolet’s hands in the 85th minute to secure their spot in the final on May 29 in Athens.

Fiorentina will now have the chance to exact revenge for their 2-1 loss to West Ham in the previous season when they play either Olympiakos of Greece or Aston Villa of England in the championship game.

Fiorentina have a chance to banish the ghost of past UECL league defeat to West Ham

It’s Fiorentina’s turn to compete in their second straight Conference League final. This time, Vincenzo Italiano’s team hope to bring the Cup back to Florence after the heartbreaking loss to West Ham the previous year, but they will have to contend with Olympiacos, a Greek team. On Wednesday, May 29, Olympiacos and Fiorentina will square off in the Conference League final at the OPAP Arena in Athens.
