These clubs have enjoyed some big-time success in England’s top-division football.
The Premier League is often regarded as the best and the most competitive league in the world. More so, in recent times it has absolutely outclassed every other league in the World and has gone into a realm of its own. The Premier League subdues some of the biggest clubs in the World and is the competition to host some of the biggest names in the footballing world.
The dominance of the Premier League on the European stage has also been the biggest indicator of the superiority of club football in England, over any other country. In fact, since the onset of the new 21st century, 14 English teams have made their way into the Champions League Final.
Even though the English top division is highly regarded as the most competitive and intense league in the world, some clubs have managed to establish their firm dominance in the league and have emerged as high and mighty entities.
Today, we take a look at five of these clubs that have managed to win the most Premier League titles since its inception in 1992.
5. Liverpool – 1
The Premier League, over its lifespan of 30 years, has seen seven different clubs gaining the honour to put their hands on that glittering, glimmering piece of trophy. Three of these seven clubs have won the title only once, and Liverpool are one of them. But the reason they made it to the top five list is that they earned more points than the other two teams in their title-winning season.
The Reds won their solitary Premier League title in 2019-20, when they outclassed and outshone every other team and put together a staggering 99 points throughout the season. Liverpool, that season, lost and drew only three games apiece and were in an incredibly different form. Their winning the title also marked an end to their scrutinising League title drought and helped them put their names in the history books as the team with the second-highest points total in a single season.
4. Arsenal – 3
The Gunners from the North of London are undoubtedly one of the most successful clubs in England and have to date won a total of three Premier League titles. Their title-winning seasons are 1997/98, 2001/02 and, of course, the famous 2003-04 league campaign, where the club made history by becoming the first-ever team to go the entire season unbeaten.
The Gunners have unfortunately not won a league title for the past two decades, but that could change very soon, as they are absolutely shining under their manager Mikel Arteta at the moment, and are looking very well on the course to claim the Premier League title this season.
3. Chelsea – 5
Arsenal’s London counterpart Chelsea are another one of the big-time achievers in the Premier League and surpasses almost all other European clubs in terms of their recent success both in the league, as well as in Europe. But everything wasn’t sunflower and sunshine for the Blues, as the club was in a very dire state in the early 2000s and was on the verge of a Financial crisis. But things took a turn for the best, as Russian billionaire Roman Abramovic took over the club in 2003 and ushered in millions to help the club achieve tons of success.
Just one year after the takeover, Chelsea won its first-ever league title and reclaimed their throne as champions the following season. The Blues continued the impressive performances through the following seasons and claimed three more Premier League titles down the road.
2. Manchester City – 8
The Blue Side of Manchester has unquestionably been the best club in England over the past 6-7 years. Ever since Pep Guardiola’s appointment, City have dominated the Premier League in a truly astounding manner, and have portrayed itself as a different kind of breed in the league. The Citizens have won a total of eight Premier League titles, five of which have come in the past six seasons.
Manchester City won the league with 100 points in 2017-18, becoming the first English side to muster up triple-digit points in one season at the top tier of England. The Sky Blues’ other two Premier League titles were won in 2011-12 when Aguero scored in the final minute of the last matchday to win the title for his team, and in 2013-14, when they denied Liverpool of their first ever Premier League title by an incredible turnaround.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City became the first club to win four consecutive Premier League titles, clinching the 2023-24 season with a 3-1 victory over West Ham on the final day.
1. Manchester United – 13
With 13 Premier League titles, Manchester United are easily the team with the most number of Premier League titles, having more than double the number of titles than any other team. The Red Devils are famously the first-ever winners of the Premier League and have ever since done extremely well to maintain their high regard and prestige in the league.
The legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was astonishingly the manager of all of United’s title wins and helped the club build a legacy like no other. Manchester United, achieved an incredible three-peat on two different occasions, including the golden era between 2006 and 2009, when the club was at its absolute peak, and had some truly world-class players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.
But despite this staggering success, it has been a decade since the Premier League trophy was last lifted at the Theatre of Dreams, and there is a severe longing among the loyal supporters, to see the club shine once again, and carve its name into the esteemed Premier League trophy.
