IFAB approves further trials for new offside rule in football
Current Chief of International Football Development at FIFA, Arsene Wenger has proposed the new rule.
New testing for a different kind of offside have been accepted by IFAB. A player is only considered offside if they are ahead of their final defender with their whole body.
FIFA, the world governing body of football is planning to test an amendment to the offside rule. Arsene Wenger, the current Chief of International Football Development at FIFA and former coach of Arsenal proposed that a player is only offside if their full body is beyond the final defender’s line.
Every season starts with new beginnings and drawings, along with many tests that ultimately become realities throughout time. Arsene Wenger brings about the next revolution, which makes reference to the offside rule.
Infantino suggested that the director of FIFA development look for a change that will help attacking football. Wenger believes he has discovered it.
The Frenchman suggests changing the offside rule because he believes the spectacle will get bigger. His concept is centred on letting the striker pass the defender as long as he maintains touch with a portion of his body that enables him to score a goal in line with the last defender.

Wenger was inspired by Premier League research that found that the number of offside calls would be halved.
“At some point measures will be taken and it may even be determined that with five or six centimeters it is not offside. Everything is under study,” authorized IFAB sources.
Of the four offsides on average in each game, only two would be offside with the change in the rule, something that could make it possible for the game to be more offensive.
The project began in 2021, and thanks to the several tests FIFA is doing, it has now become an actuality. With the introduction of VAR, the semi-automatic offside, and other novel developments in recent years, the initial stages are strikingly identical to those that were implemented in their day.
Infantino always concealed his wish to adapt.
“It is in the study phase because we want soccer to be more offensive every day. In 135 years of history, it has only been changed twice. Arsene Wenger has presented us with one possibility, which is that there is no offside if the striker is in an offside position, but a part of the body with which you can score a goal is in line with the defense. In this way we would have a much more offensive football”, he declared when the initiative began to take shape.
