Quarter finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup set to be underway

Inter Miami’s dependence on Lionel Messi continues, as the team’s form has dipped since he has been out injured. However, the Miami-based side also have other key players such as Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez, who would hope to be able to make the difference against their Mexican counterparts in the first leg of the Champions Cup quarter finals.

Meanwhile, Monterrey have been in some very good form, as they sit joint top of the Liga MX with 28 points. Brandon Vazquez has been in sparkling form since his move from the MLS, having scored 5 goals in 10 games already, with 3 in 4 games in the Champions Cup.

Kick-Off:

Friday: 4th April 2024, 5:30 AM IST

Location: Chase Stadium, Florida, USA

Form:

Inter Miami (all-competitions): D-L-W-W-L

Monterrey (all-competitions): L-W-W-W-W

Players to watch:

Luis Suarez (Inter Miami)

Luis Suarez is having to bear the brunt of the attacking responsibility for Inter Miami in the absence of Lionel Messi. The Uruguayan has been in good form, having scored 5 times in 7 MLS games, with 12 total goal involvements in just 9 games this season. The 37-year-old would be the key if Mami are to hurt Monterrey.

Brandon Vazquez (Monterrey)

Brandon Vazquez is the key man in Monterrey’s smooth functioning team. The American international has become key since his move from FC Cincinnati this summer, having scored 8 times already this season. The 25-year-old scored in both the legs against former club Cincinnati in the previous round of the competition.

Match Facts:

  • Inter Miami have won all 5 matches this season where Messi has played, but lost 2 out of 3 without him.

Injury and team news:

Inter Miami have struggled with injuries, with a bunch of key players unavailable. The biggest miss would be Lionel Messi, who is out with a hamstring issue. He is just one of the nine players missing with injuries, including the likes of Facundo Farias, Federico Redondo and Robbie Robinson.

Meanwhile, Monterrey have most of their squad fit and available, with only centre-back Axel Grijalva out injured with a torn lateral knee ligament.

Head-to-head:

Total matches – 7

Inter Miami wins – 2

Monterrey wins – 2

Draws – 3

Predicted lineup:

Inter Miami predicted lineup (4-3-3):

Callender (GK), Weigandt, Sailor, Aviles, Alba, Ruiz, Busquets, Gomez, Gressel, Suarez, Taylor

Monterrey predicted lineup (4-3-3):

Andrada (GK), Medina, Guzman, Moreno, Arteaga, Rodriguez, Romo, Canales, Meza, Vazquez, Gallardo

Match prediction:

Monterrey have far too much fire power and are a more balanced team, which should help them take the victory.
