Iraq face a daunting challenge against the 2018 World Cup winners.
Iraq head into their second Group I fixture. They need a strong response following their 4-1 defeat to Norway in the opening round.
Despite the disappointing result, the Lions of Mesopotamia showed flashes of attacking quality. They managed to get on the scoresheet, offering encouragement ahead of another difficult test.
With France beginning their campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Senegal, Iraq will need to produce one of their best performances in recent years. That too, if they want to take something from the contest.
The meeting carries significant importance for both sides. France have the opportunity to move closer to securing qualification for the knockout rounds. Meanwhile, Iraq are aiming to reignite their campaign before a final group-stage encounter against Senegal.
We can expect a disciplined approach from Jesús Casas’ side, with experienced internationals tasked with frustrating one of the tournament favourites.

Who all will be expected to be in the starting lineup?

Goalkeeper Jalal Hassan will occupy the position between the posts in this World Cup match. He brings a wealth of international experience to the squad. The veteran goalkeeper’s leadership and composure will be crucial as Iraq prepare to face one of the most dangerous attacking units at the tournament.
Hussein Ali provides energy and attacking support from the right side of the defence. Meanwhile, Merchas Doski operates on the opposite flank. He offers balance with his defensive discipline and ability to contribute going forward.
At the heart of the backline, Zaid Tahseen and Frans Dhia Hashim form a defensive unit tasked with containing the movement and pace of France’s forwards. Their organisation, positioning and aerial ability will be tested throughout the match as Iraq look to remain compact without possession.
Ibrahim Bayesh brings creativity and directness from wide areas. He often carries the ball forward and looks to create opportunities in transition.
Zaid Ismael provides energy in central midfield and helps connect defence with attack. Meanwhile, Amir Al-Ammari adds technical quality, composure and ball progression in possession.
On the left side, Ali Jasim offers flair and unpredictability. The young attacker remains one of Iraq’s brightest talents. He possesses the ability to trouble defenders with his dribbling and movement.
Aymen Hussein leads the line and remains Iraq’s primary goal-scoring threat. The striker’s physical presence, aerial strength and finishing ability make him a key figure whenever Iraq enter the attacking third.
Alongside him, Ali Al-Hamadi adds mobility and intelligent movement across the frontline. His willingness to press defenders and exploit spaces behind the backline provides Iraq with another dimension in attack.
