Jose Mourinho hits back at Pep Guardiola's recent remarks
The Portuguese head coach fires a shot at the Spanish manager.
After Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, made an unwarranted jab at Jose Mourinho’s lesser number of Premier League titles, Mourinho took a jab at him.
During City’s terrible 2-0 loss at Anfield last weekend, Guardiola compared himself to longtime rival Mourinho by showing the Liverpool supporters six fingers. When Mourinho was at the helm at Manchester United and the team was having a terrible run of outcomes, he famously utilized three fingers to symbolize the number of league titles he had won, all of which he had won with Chelsea.
Earlier this week, the City manager was questioned about the connection. The reporter implied that Mourinho’s 2018 “three for me” comment signalled the start of his downfall at United.
“I hope not in my case,” Guardiola, whose side won their first game in eight outings on Wednesday, replied. “He won three, I won six.. but we are the same like that.
“We are together in the those situations. To make our fans know that we are much, much better than the people that sing that [Liverpool fans singing sacked in the morning].
“It [the gesture] was just to make our fans feel that what we have done is extraordinary. I want to prove that we are an incredible football club. Sooner or later it’s going to be the end but I will try to extend as much as possible for the best of my club.
Mourinho’s response in fashion has been characteristically harsh. The former Chelsea, United, and Tottenham manager, who is currently in charge of Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce, stated:
“Guardiola said something to me. He won three titles and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly. If I lost, I want to congratulate my opponent because he was better than me. I don’t want to win by dealing with 115 lawsuits.”
Mourinho was alluding to the Premier League‘s 115 financial accusations against City. The four-time consecutive champions contest the accusations, and a decision is not anticipated until the end of 2025.
