Manchester United plan to boost their defence
Several reports claim that Manchester United have prioritised finding a new left-back during the summer transfer window. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s injury issues have left Erik ten Hag with few options for the position.
Malacia hasn’t played one match so far this season and might not make it back to the club before the conclusion of the season, but Shaw has made 12 Premier League games. According to Fabrizio Romano, Man Utd has not altered their plans to sign a new left-back since Sir Jim Ratcliffe joined the team.
“Manchester United have already planned months ago to bring in a new left-back in the summer; expected to be a young one, an important player,” Romano wrote on X.
“Shortlist to be decided once board structure will be completed but Man Utd will go for a new left-back, no matter what happens with Malacia.”
Let’s take a look at left-backs Manchester United should target
5. Owen Wijndal
Ten Hag looks back towards the Eredivisie. You can never be certain about anything. The Dutchman has made it a practice to sign players who are currently on the Dutch flight or who have previously played there. Following Ten Hag’s departure from Ajax last summer, Wijndal signed a five-year contract with the team. He started none of their first two league games this season, indicating that he has dropped down the roster after making 28 appearances and contributing five assists the previous season.
The 23-year-old is an aggressive full-back with a creative streak, and if United went phoning he might give in to the lure of the Premier League. Once more, though, playing time after Shaw recovers from injury may present a challenge.
4. Miguel Gutierrez
Miguel Gutierrez, a left-back for Girona, is a target for Manchester United even if Real Madrid may exercise their buy-back option.
After completing his training at Real Madrid’s academy, the Spanish left-back joined Girona in 2022. After making 25 appearances in La Liga this season, where he recorded one goal and four assists, Gutierrez has established himself as a staple in the team’s starting lineup.According to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United, one of the biggest teams in the Premier League, has been keeping a close eye on the player’s progress and may be persuaded to sign him in the summer.

3. Milos Kerkez
The Red Devils’ summer transfer plan, which was drafted by new owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos, is a result of their desperation to strengthen their defence.
Premier League teams hoping to upgrade their defences for the upcoming campaign have come to love Kerkez. Man Utd anticipates neutralising a number of its players, such as Jonny Evans, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and defender Raphael Varane.Erik ten Hag is considering defenders because of Lisandro Martinez’s fitness worries as well. The Red Devils have taken notice of Cherries star Kerkez since the team moved to Vitality Stadium last summer.
2. Luca Netz
Left-back Luca Netz is currently considered by Manchester United as a possible Tyrell Malacia successor. When Netz was just 17 years old in 2021, he made his debut in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin. After just 11 games for Hertha Berlin, Netz was acquired by Moenchengladbach in the summer of 2021 for a reported amount of £1.5 million. He went on to appear in 73 games with Borussia Moenchengladbach’s first squad, tallying 13 assists and two goals.
1. Theo Hernandez
This summer, Manchester United is rumoured to be interested in signing AC Milan full-back Theo Hernandez, albeit they will have to pay for the opportunity. Since joining the Italian team in 2019, the Frenchman has played 167 matches for Real Madrid. However, Hernandez signed under Paolo Maldini, the club director, who was fired earlier in June, fueling more rumours that the 25-year-old may leave Milan. Manchester City is expected to compete with the Red Devils, and the best teams in La Liga might attempt to recruit him back to his native Spain.
