Lionel Messi has struggled to remain fit this season
Everyone is aware that Lionel Messi is hurt, Inter Miami‘s record is as shaky without him, and their current campaign has already been more stressful than we could have ever predicted.
So what specifically is wrong with Messi, and why does he have such a dismal injury record? Will he return to participate in a match that appears to be getting harder every day versus Monterrey on Wednesday, April?
The public first learned of Messi’s fitness this season prior to the match against Montreal. With the World Cup winner on the bench, Inter Miami’s hopes of making the playoffs vanished virtually overnight as their 2023 MLS season changed from sunny to stormy.
This was not intended to happen this season, with a “Messi plan” in place to cut and tender his minutes. Tata Martino described the diagnosis as an “overload in his right hamstring,” and Miami has been trudging through mud ever since, trying to find a replacement for his magic.
But Miami, without Messi, suffered the first loss of the year in their own stadium against CF Montreal. A few days later, with the Argentine returning in the mix, Messi and Suárez lit up the CONCACAF Champions Cup, sending Miami to the quarterfinals with ease.

That is where the good news ends. Have you ever had to play against New York twice in a row? They are so good that they deserve to be named twice. Find out what Tata Martino believes. Initially, the Red Bulls outclassed them and put four past Callender, forcing a draw from City when they suppressed their front line. Without Messi, Miami has been stodgy on offence and shaky on defence—a deadly combination.
“Leo is working with the physios”, said Javi Morales, Martino’s technical assistant, “he will not be available [against NYCFC] but we will try to do our best to have him here at home next Wednesday against Monterrey. We are all working on it with the medical staff. That is why he is ruled out for tomorrow and we will try to have him available for the next match against Monterrey”, added the coach.
“We know that we are not happy with what happened against Red Bulls, we know that important matches are coming and especially tomorrow. We will be able to turn the page and give another version of ourselves to our fans. This is a group that has experience and knows how to play, I don’t think they are in a bad state of mind, but in terms of our play we have to improve because there are important games coming up and we have to get there in the best way possible.”
