Lionel Messi provides worrying update about his Inter Miami future

The Argentine was asked about his contract talks following a 3-1 loss to Orlando City.
After Inter Miami’s crushing loss to Orlando City, an MLS reporter approached Lionel Messi and queried the former Barcelona star about his future at the club.
The reporter wanted to know if Messi intends to stay with Javier Mascherano’s team after his contract expires in December 2025. Mascherano is the coach, and he has already made it clear that he wants to keep Messi and thinks it would be a good move for the Florida-based team.

Lionel Messi’s very succinct—and telling—answer to the inquiry raised serious concerns about his future: “I don’t know anything,” he responded with a small smile before hurriedly making his way to the dressing room.
Mascherano’s post-match remarks are the only (and scant) hints we have.
“We hope to have updates in the coming weeks regarding Leo, as it would be very important for the club, the fans, and also for MLS,” the coach stated. “Signing Jordi [Alba] for the next two years is important to show stability.”
According to a number of rumors last month, Messi is expected to sign a contract extension that would last until the end of the 2026 campaign. Jorge Mas, the club’s co-owner, has assured supporters of this.
“The stars are aligning for something great, for a beautiful future for the club and for Lionel. It’s solely his decision. I expect that within 60-90 days, we’ll have to determine all of this. My hope has always been – and everything we’re doing – is to see Messi play at our new stadium in 2026. Hopefully, that happens,” said Mas.
It’s unclear if Lionel Messi will stay with Inter Miami or leave the MLS team with just over seven months remaining on his current deal.
But the current performance of the club has been concerning as they have continued to taste defeats and are now sixth in the league, which is hurting their pursuit of defending the Supporters’ Shield.
